I'm going to try it too, but so far when I shoot one of the engines it just blows up and the plane crashes.

Is it possible to have your engine shut off if it get hit?

Yes, it also shuts off when youre flying to rough.

yes it is, ive done some extensive testing on the damage model and one of the things that came apparent, your engine can die and your just left to glide to the ground, it shows up on that little damage representation of your plane as black when it is not working
I once even landed the spit on that large runway with a hole blown in both wings, a hole in the tail section, bullet holes in the canopy, huge chunks in the elevators, jammed flaps, oil spattered cockpit and no propellor. |

Oh it was, God if only i had video recorded it.
you could probably do it yourself. just park your spit behind the enemy bomber without shooting it (very tempting) and let it fill you with hot lead until you think there is no more your plane can take. i would advise being somewhat near a runway or large field. |

I just experienced this yesterday. I was trying my hand at realistic for Dover and got shot to when I was just chasing down bombers at the end. I watch my speed dwindle, by altitude get lower, and finally stall out over the water. It is maddening trying to get to the mainland going about 157

This does remind me of what often happened in Il-2 when attacking bombers.
During the attack you'd catch one or two bullets in the engine from the bombers tail gunners which you might not even notice. The hits would cause damage to the fuel line, oil line, radiator or another component of the engine. After a while the engine would start to fail as it over heated or something and you'd eventually lose too much airspeed and crash quite a while after the origonal hit. There was usually a weird grinding noise from the engine as it started to fail or some light smoke/fuel vapor/oil but sometimes there was no warning until you started to lose engine RPM. Presuming the engine damage model is as good as in PC Il-2 it could be this or you could just be running the throttle at 100% for too long. After you disengage from a battle, check the oil pressure, fuel gage and engine temp for any problems. |
