The message for the lever should read "grate", not "crate", methinks. I was confused as well. The "grate" is the portcullis blocking your exit from this area. From where you stand in your screenshot, the portcullis is behind you to your left and, up a slope. If it hasn't opened then you've hit a bug. Try replaying from the last checkpoint.
