I downloaded War Thunder the other day. It's interesting and the graphics are nicely detailed but it isn't IL-2 1946 by any means. They are barely comparable. One is a free to play grind fest with pretty graphics and quick action. The other is a serious simulation with 10 years of addons and development... it may be showing its age but it's still the king of WWII aviation simulators for now.
Battle of Stalingrad is promising. I'm playing the early access right now and it's REALLY well done. I hope its a success and features and content continue to be added.

More or less.
It's a shame, because War Thunder has a great selection of aircraft, beautiful visuals and sound, but when it comes down to the meat of it....ugh. I want to like it, but it's absolutely no fun to me whatsoever. |

Tried War Thunder for a few weeks. The conclusion I came to is that, despite it's visual prettiness, it's garbage compared to IL-2. If anything, War Thunder shows just how incredibly good IL-2 is, and further ignited my passion for it. The only real enjoyment I got out of War Thunder was with tanks on the Kursk map in Simulation Mode. Everything else is a shoot-em-up arcade fest on claustrophobic maps.
Really no comparison between the two. War Thunder caters to those looking for quick action with dazzling visual effects, and little else. However, if pretty visuals are the only priority for you then by all means go War Thunder. |
