The reason I asked how much was known about Coastal Command is because as I understand it was the only RAF Command (based in the UK (I don't know much about the foreign based Commands)) that had anything to do with flying over water (except as a route to other land based objectives obviously). If there had been a High Seas Command, the Navy would have claimed it. The Navy had the Fleet Air Arm, which came out of Navy funding. The Navy, in peacetime at least, would have loved, shortsightedly, to have had some of the RAF's funding to build ships with. Coastal Command flew the Sunderland on missions, Training Command possibly flew some for their own function, but all Sunderlands engaged in military activities would have been Coastal Command planes.

If this is old news, I'm sorry, but the answer I got to my question didn't make it clear that this is known, if it is.
