The airman is John Lonsdale of 3 squadron and the picture was taken at Summer camp Warmwell 1939. Too much scrumpy was the cause.

Squadron Leader E F J Charles, Officer Commanding No. 611 Squadron RAF, recounts his experiences to other pilots of the Squadron at Biggin Hill, Kent, on the day after sharing the honour, with Commandant Rene Mouchotte, of shooting down Biggin Hill's 1,000th enemy aircraft.

Flight Lieutenant Walter 'Farmer' Lawson, one of No 19 Squadron's flight commanders, photographed in his flying kit at Fowlmere, the satellite airfield of Duxford, late September 1940. As well as his 'Mae West', he wears a Type B flying helmet, Mk II goggles and a Type D constant-flow oxygen mask.

Two RAF Bomber crewmen minutes after their return form a combat mission.
Fear was the emotion most commonly remembered by those who survived.
