i've tried to clear the tower but my army is nowhere near strong enough to defeat the undead army that is there, there are 6-7 stacks of 700ish vamps and they just eat me. There is also a guy in that map, Lin Therien that is standing in front of a cave and there are 4 stacks behind him that are all even or slightley weaker, but he won't let me past him.

Unfortunately that is how you have to progress the story and it is one of the toughest fights in the game. Try different strategies or try some different units to try to get it done. I did the fight on impossible and I think I had to do it twice and the second time I came out out with about 40 griffins left over and that was it. Unfortunately its another very unbalanced mechanic of the game and obviously was not balanced properly before the game got released but you sound about the right level to be taking on that fight you just going to have to change of your strategy at this point.

I loved that fight, it was brutal, I lost maybe 70% of my troops, but that's exactly why I loved it, it was a tough fight. A fight which leaves me with all my troops presents no challenge as far as I am concerned.
