Why are we so rude to one another online? Simple.

This is why, explained simply.

To give a more thorough explanation: It's far less likely that being a complete muppet online will lead you to get your face smashed in than what being a complete muppet in real life will. Being banned from a forum, or unfriended on Facebook, is about the extent of the punishment involved and, to be honest, isn't much of a punishment anyway. True, there is a bit of social stigma that can result in being unfriended on Facebook (it's the perfect platform if you want to badmouth someone or plant rumors about someone), but that's fairly normal in real life as well. I'm pretty sure that even the worst troll on these boards are the nicest people when you meet them in real life. Why? Again: Lack of any physical consequence.

If computers were equipped with hardware that kicked you in the groin every time you were an idiot online, you'd see far less idiots.

On the web you can post what you think without the artificial filter that usually goes in place between your brain and mouth to make your comments more palatable for the listener. At the same time it can shortcut the brain/mouth link so you type on instinct rather than rationale; posts tend to be more "in your face".

Hey, **** all of you, don't tell me what to do!

I actually disagree with some of this, anonymity brings out your true colours. If you're a dick but you hide it in social circumstance then... well... you're an absolute cock online. This seems to be frighteningly common.

Annonimity?......you practically tell everyone your life story daily, you seem to be under some impression it's interesting, I've said it before but you are simply a narcissist, you impress yourself too much, claiming to have a philology degree when you can't even spell it, Fjordmonkeys post has you down to a tee.

and you just proved the whole point of the thread

who do you think this fit better a person who insult or someone who discusses ideas:

when was the last time you called someone to the face narcisistic or fjord monkey called someone moron to his face in real life as he did to me

oh irony
