From various things I have read leading up to the trailer's release, the underlying storyline is not that far removed from that of 2001 and plays with the whole Von Daniken/Stitchin "Alien gods" concept.

Yes, Ridley Scott want to stay far from the last movies (above all the horrible AvP).

That is reassuring to know.

Personally, I didn't mind AvP that much.... but, by the same token, I "didn't mind" Dude, Where's my Car?

Compared to the first 2 films, AvP was embarrassing at best.

I do take the unpopular view that, awfully dated CGI aside, the third one was alright..... mainly because it boasted the remarkable talents of the late Brian Glover.... I am easily pleased like that sometimes.

I loved the 3rd too...

To me the things are:
Alien -> "What's that thing? How can I fight it?"
Aliens -> "I almost understand what I'm fighting but can I really fight it?"
Alien³ -> "Ok I know my enemy but I got nothing to fight it"

These a totally different movies: the scary one, the action movie and the frantic survival (I loved the camera acting as the creature's sight chasing the convicts).
