I remember playing the demo on the PS1. That first drop off in the canyon level was a mind blower, and you knew right then that any racing game (regardless of genre) that was to come after this would never be the same. Everything just fell out from under you and you were floating untill you hit ground again. As Keanu Reeves would say, "Woah."
Didn't the short lived 3DO have a version of WIPE OUT too? I remember seeing the 3DO in stores (@ $700.00 a pop) and seeing the demo on TV screens. It wasn't exactly like this, but the mechanics were very similar.
