Stock Steam settings keep your game up to date, but you can check and make sure by rightclicking CLOD in Steam and picking properties, then under updates make sure it says "always keep this game up to date".
As for the latest official patch... I think it's v1.02.14821, but don't take my word on that as I've been using betapatches for quite a while now. You should probably take a look at the COD video's thread and check out the latest video's of the 1.5 beta...the sounds alone make it worth installing.

Thanks Warhound! It was just like you said. I do have updates on. So, about this 1.5 beta... You say its good? I should bite the bullet and give it a try. After all I have nothing to lose.
