is eyecandy ruining playability?

I've read a review of LA Noire that said it is visually stunning and also is very engrossing.

I think John Carmack had a sensible answer for this question. From memory it goes something like...

'A good game is a good game, but the same game with better graphics is a better game'.


Of course, 'better' here is debatable. I've seen plenty of remakes that fell short of the charm of the original, for example. But I think Carmack's being pragmatic.

Games are a visual medium.. If I want something with an amazing plot- I will probably turn to a good novel, rather than next week's first person shooter.
