I think re-creating the aircraft in 3D only takes perhaps a week (exterior model) and perhaps the same for the cockpit view! If all the references are good and the devs decide the cockpit represents historical accuracy!

However I believe the 6 month thing is said to be a full- flyable aircraft with what I imagine to be the most time-consuming task : To animate every single lever, button, gauge, mechanical part etc etc etc. I think that's where the working hours go

I could just as easily find it insulting that you demand they either lay off a bunch of modellers or keep them on the payroll without doing anything, but i don't usually get insulted by people having a different opinion

It's not like these guys are AI programmers or sound engineers or people who can dig into the engine and eliminate a couple of things that cause stutters, or otherwise help with any of the existing issues.

What they do is draw pretty textures, that's what they know, that's what they're paid to do and i'd rather have them working and getting a bit ahead of the proverbial curve, than sit in the office twiddling their thumbs just because some of us here entertain a notion that software developer teams are comprised of jack of all trades employees who can jump around between different fields of expertise.
