I think a lot has to do with texture loading. If you fly over a smaller city you can load everything at once, but flying over London with a lot of buildings your video RAM is not enough and the textures are loaded in batches.

For example, if i use maximum detail on my older Ati 4890 1Gb, i can clearly see that even inside the cockpit sometimes the textures remain low-resolution and don't load immediately. That's because i have an older GPU with less video RAM and i also have only 3Gb of RAM, so the sim loads whatever it can first and then loads the rest in "steps".

How much VRAM do you have on your card and in what resolution do you run it? Some say that 1,5GB VRAM for 1920x1200 (or 1080) just isn't enough. I've read that VRAM usage on that resolution wants to go up to about 1,7GB. ...But I didn't test it myself and its only what I read. Normally you would assume that a 580GTX would be more than enough for the job. It's just a very powerful card for today's standards.

I myself run building amount on high instead of unlimited because it makes a noticeable difference in performance. The visuals are for me acceptable this way. Only in London I see Lego blocks far away. Above Dover (as in your screenshot) I don't get any Lego blocks when building amount is on high.

I bring this one up, as I realized just yesterday that although I changed my building setting to unlimited, some of the buildings suddenly just disappear?! Flying low level back home I realized several times that the buildings just in front of my plane vanish and only the flat building "photo" remains. I am 100% sure that this problem was not there some days ago and I do absolutely not know why this suddenly starts to bother me. Maybe I should change back to building amount "high"? Anyone else experienced vanishing buildings?

Buildings is good. Must be your level of detail. Probably low?

Buildings are fine for me too, but I did have vanishing planes mid-dogfight last night for the first time ever! A couple of people have mentioned weird stuff happening the last couple of days, it's almost like they snuck a patch out without telling us. I put my massive performance improvement down to a full reinstall, but when I ran the .net framework from the redist last night (had a really odd launcher crash, something about a forced shutdown that was invalid or along those lines, so i thought I'd run it just in case it helped), it 'repaired' my install, restarted my computer and suddenly 110's are blinking out of existence mid-fight. Could almost swear to more stutters afterwards, too, only a little but noticeable.

I'm starting to think this game is cursed lol

In general, buildings are fine, yes. But it is just strange that I think for example: ok, this group of houses is a good landscape "object" for turning base, I fly in this direction and when I am almost there, the group of houses is gone but the flat phototexture indicating houses stays. Kills atmosphere like hell...

I haven't seen any disappearing houses, but maybe I'm not paying enough attention. But I've seen those flat houses. It looks like every major town/city has a few of them. I've always wondered why they are there and what they are supposed to be.

By the way, I play with building amount on high.

the Dover photo is from another guy not mine
on high settings
if i set it to ultimate over London the lego dissapears most of them at least
the gtx 580 that i have is 1.5 vram
its an excellent card and i don't need to waste more money to see more performance for a not optimised sim
