CEM is very demanding, in fact many people said that turning it off gave them an extra 10 FPS.

If you fly on autopilot you are essentially having your aircraft fly like the AI ones. The AI uses different engine management routines to save processing power because if they all used the code used for the player aircraft it would make the game unplayable/too low FPS.

For this reason, planes under AI control don't have the exact same precision in CEM as the player planes. For example, instead of monitoring temperatures they might have simpler rules to stop them from "cheating", like "don't use full throttle for more than X minutes". This is all simpler for the PC to calculate than the full CEM which it has to do when under player control, that's why you don't get crashes when you enable the autopilot.
