Without Mapicons you don't see the planes but you can also select them . Hope the developers will make a better solution in the future

Is that the ingame provided org. map?

There are an excellent and proven implementation of a better solution.
It was done in IL-2, Pasific Fighters, Forgotten Battles and in Il-2 1946.

An easy mix would be to have a list next to the open map in COD. So when a player choose a slot on the list, it would show on the map and visa versa.
