Here's what the Sony blog states:

Posted on 21 April by James Gallagher – Blog Manager, SCEE

As you are no doubt aware, the current emergency outage is continuing this afternoon and all Sony Online Network services remain unavailable. Our support teams are investigating the cause of the problem, including the possibility of targeted behaviour by an outside party. If the reported Network problems are indeed caused by such acts, we would like to once again thank our customers who have borne the brunt of the attack through interrupted service.

Our engineers are continuing to work to restore and maintain the services, and we appreciate our customers’ continued support. For further information, please refer to updates on PlayStation.com, here on PlayStation.Blog and via our @PlayStationEU twitter feed.

Found a fun thing to do in free flight! Take a hurricane up over Dover, machine guns only, and see how many of the little boats you can explode before dying/getting bored! (Yes, I am easily amused when it comes to exploding things from aeroplanes!)

I've heard that hackers stolen sensible data from a lot ( milions and milions ) of psn users. Credit card details, personall data ( address and stuff.... ) so be carefull.

Web rumours say 70 million accounts, ie. everyone. I suppose that makes the chances of it being you who gets ripped off very small..
If you say that to open and look at 1 account takes 10 seconds it would still take about 22 years to look at them all!

Did anyone else have weird sign in problems in the week leading up to this?
Auto sign in failed first time every time, but I could sign in 2nd attempt.

I also got an error when I tried to buy something from PS Store, it kept saying my address was wrong and my card was invalid, (pre switch off, obviously) which makes me wonder how long it was before sony noticed that someone got in.

EDIT : Link to Sony's PSN down FAQ
