The new mobos require THREE banks of the same type (not two like the older ones):
Therefore you can go for 3x1Gb DDR3 = total 3Gb RAM <-NOT RECOMMENDED
or 3x2Gb DDR3 = total 6Gb RAM <- RECOMMENDED
or 3x4Gb DDR3 = total 12Gb RAM <- if the price difference is negligable

Depends on the mobo, there are some around which support triple with 4 slots occupied.
