OK. Firstly I went into Steam via the taskbar to Library. Under 'ALL GAMES' I highlighted the line 'IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover' and right-clicked it. Under Properties/ Local Files I selected the Delete Local Game Content option (*see note below)
When the delete was through I exited Steam from the taskbar.

Second, I opened the CHCM (using Run as Administrator) and selected a clean map. I already had one prepared and calibrated. No buttons entered, everything DX. I downloaded it and exited.

Next I opened Steam from the Desktop icon using Run as Administrator. At this point I reinstalled COD using my hard copy. Once that was complete it was back in the Steam Library waiting for the patch to reload. That done I restarted to the game and went to Options/ Controls/ Axes. I deleted all the previous attempts and started with the Elevator and it went like a breeze. I double-clicked the space next to Elevator and the small window opened. It was offering me a command but I cleared it and pulled the stick. The new command appeared and I OK'd it. Then I hit Apply and highlighted the box 'Elevator' again. The bars lit up to show the movement of the stick. Success!
I went through the list of axis commands repeating the process. All good.

Then I went to the Buttons list and chose Toggle Engine. I opened the Assignment Window and pressed a button on my TM MFD which was also accepted. I hit Apply again and checked it, then I hit Save As and saved the whole thing. Note that I deactivated the whole Steam Cloud function a while back, so this Control File is stored in the Folder C:\Users\*****\Documents\1C SoftClub\il-2 sturmovik cliffs of dover
I called it Bob.

More later about tying this in with the CHCM - my hand is tired

Also a ggod thing to do with sims and win 7 or vista; Do not install under Program files.

Just install as admin under C:\

Also I usually just do default installs and hardly ever experience problems running things.

That is really good idea, I keep all program files on separate drive ...

If the drive is fast enough.
but I usually have problems installing programs on a separate drive.

My performance suffers

My other drives are just for storage.

Programs I don't use that often just get uninstalled until I need them.

Thanks for posting that Brando, I have done a root and brunch uninstall/re-install, currently sitting at 60% for re-installing the game from Steam.

Fingers crossed.

D'oh! I don't understand.

Checklist:
CHCM, run as Admin, fresh map, all your components, calibrated, downloaded, drivers installed?

CoD installed, update installed? Under Options/Controls/Axes you right click the desired axis and open the small window, then keep hitting Clear? Is any axis being offered in that window?
