Apparently Steam is just a CoD retailer. If one wants to use Steam for online play then I would imagine one would need a Steam Account, but since Steam isn't responsible for the DRM of CoD then an account wouldn't be needed otherwise. Updates/add-ons may also be available through Steam for those who have such an account, otherwise it's the old update/add-on method we're
all accustomed to.

so I presume Hyperlobby will still be ok for online play when servers become available (with no exclusive need for Steam for online play)

This just gets weirder all the time.
Now do I need to cancel my boxed preorder and get it digitally to get it integrated into steam?

Edit:
Then again its worded that "you don't need to download anything" witch is normal since the steam games have steam installation files on the disc
Will just have to wait and see.

The game only uses SteamWorks for match-making and not the Steam DRM.
The way I interpret. it is if you have the Boxed version you will need steam to play multiplayer but not single player.

You can add any game on your PC to your steam account.

But not fully integrated ie. the possibility download CoD from steam thereafter witch is what I'm after. I know something bad is going to happen to the disc the moment I need it the most

Damn, we still need Steam.

"Can we play this game online without the Steam software?"
