At lunchtime on the 16th the squadron was ordered to scramble and
patrol over the airfield at 2000ft. This day saw one of the largest raids
on Tangmere and was also the day that Billy Fiske of 601 Squadron
was to lose his life. The raid was already in full swing when the ÔBÕ
Flight Commander, Findlay Boyd got airborne.
He had just retracted his wheels when a Ju87 appeared in his sights.
With his first burst the Ju87 crashed just outside the airfield. He did
a quick circuit and landed to be re-armed. Airborne for only a minute,
this must have been one of the quickest kills of the war. The German
pilot must have wondered what had hit him.
