Guess we'll have to wait until we can experiment with time of day/atmospheric conditions options in the mission builder before we can comment on this one.

hopefully the sim doesn't go down the route of artificially limiting our view through the use of smog/haze just to keep framerates up.

On a good day we should be able to see for miles and miles

Yes, and also remember that any screen shots you see of the game are taken from another machine with likely different settings than your machine.

Also, This is simulating 1940. Things were a lot different then.

I would rather see them do super clear than slightly off if they had to make a choice. I have seen days that were so clear it was incredible. Those days are seldom here, but they do happen.

I would not worry too much. Il2 has always had options for the amount of atmospheric haze, compare these pictures taken with clear and hazy weather settings. The second picture is very close to your picture in the amount of haze.
