He's using an ATI solution whereas you're on an Nvidia cfg, JRock.

Try using this OpenGL section - I run it with 4*AA 16*AS I think, good FPS on 4870 512mb with 8400@3.8, win7 64bit 4gb ram. Someone like Flanker 35M might have further tweaks.

edit:: Oh btw JRock, I noticed you have hardware shaders off in your OpenGL section - try it set to 1.

Hi

Always back up your old conf.ini file before making any changes.

After making changes fly in QMB for 3-4 mins before doing any NTRK testing.

Please note the settings below are not definitive, but work across a large selection of high end Nvidia and ATI cards from late 2009 to date.

This OGL conf ini is optimized for ATI cards landscape and perfect water 2, which is the maximum ATI run at, water 3/4 is for Nvidia shaders.

ATI

[Render_OpenGL]
TexQual=3
TexMipFilter=3
TexCompress=0
TexFlags.UseDither=1
TexFlags.UseAlpha=0
TexFlags.UseIndex=0
TexFlags.PolygonStipple=0
TexFlags.UseClampedSprites=0
TexFlags.DrawLandByTriangles=0
TexFlags.UseVertexArrays=0
TexFlags.DisableAPIExtensions=0
TexFlags.ARBMultitextureExt=1
TexFlags.TexEnvCombineExt=1
TexFlags.SecondaryColorExt=1
TexFlags.VertexArrayExt=0
TexFlags.ClipHintExt=0
TexFlags.UsePaletteExt=0
TexFlags.TexAnisotropicExt=1
TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=1

TexFlags.TexEnvCombine4NV=0
TexFlags.TexEnvCombineDot3=1
TexFlags.DepthClampNV=0
TexFlags.SeparateSpecular=1
TexFlags.TextureShaderNV=0

HardwareShaders=1

Shadows=2
Specular=2
SpecularLight=2
DiffuseLight=2
DynamicalLights=1
MeshDetail=2
VisibilityDistance=3

Sky=2
Forest=3
LandShading=3
LandDetails=2
LandGeom=3
TexLarge=1
TexLandQual=3
TexLandLarge=1

VideoSetupId=17
Water=2
Effects=2
ForceShaders1x=0

PolygonOffsetFactor=-0.0625
PolygonOffsetUnits=-1.0

This OGL conf ini is optimized for Nvidia cards landscape and perfect water 4, which is the maximum NvidiaI run at, water 1/2 is for ATI shaders But Nvidia will run water 1/2/3/4

Nvidia

[Render_OpenGL]
TexQual=3
TexMipFilter=3
TexCompress=0
TexFlags.UseDither=1
TexFlags.UseAlpha=0
TexFlags.UseIndex=0
TexFlags.PolygonStipple=0
TexFlags.UseClampedSprites=0
TexFlags.DrawLandByTriangles=1
TexFlags.UseVertexArrays=1
TexFlags.DisableAPIExtensions=0
TexFlags.ARBMultitextureExt=1
TexFlags.TexEnvCombineExt=1
TexFlags.SecondaryColorExt=1
TexFlags.VertexArrayExt=1
TexFlags.ClipHintExt=0
TexFlags.UsePaletteExt=0
TexFlags.TexAnisotropicExt=1
TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=0

TexFlags.TexEnvCombine4NV=1
TexFlags.TexEnvCombineDot3=1
TexFlags.DepthClampNV=1
TexFlags.SeparateSpecular=1
TexFlags.TextureShaderNV=1

HardwareShaders=1

Shadows=2
Specular=2
SpecularLight=2
DiffuseLight=2
DynamicalLights=1
MeshDetail=2
VisibilityDistance=3

Sky=2
Forest=2
LandShading=3
LandDetails=2

LandGeom=3
TexLarge=1
TexLandQual=3
TexLandLarge=1

VideoSetupId=17
Water=4
Effects=1
ForceShaders1x=0

PolygonOffsetFactor=-0.15
PolygonOffsetUnits=-3.0

Please note these are settings not for maximum FPS.

If you suffer from poor FPS, lower the water settings, if still poor then lower the visibility distance and or the landscape settings.

Ok, I finally got it right but I had to reinstall the game 3 times. The problem was related to the installation folder - I bought the game from GOG and, by default, the game installs to a directory under "Program Files".

Whenever I tried to change anything in the config file, the system would ask for my permission to modify file (running Windows 7), via a security pop-up. I always managed to modify it, but failed to notice any changes when actually running the game.

On my last try I decided to install it to another directory (something like c:\games\IL2). And that did it - no problems modifying the config file and very nice waves in-game!

Hope this helps someone else.

Good to hear you have it running, windows can be such a pain in the *** , anyway messing around with settings in the config.ini can cause a week's 'amusements' to get the things right again, and combined with mods it's a nightmare.

sorry about the confusion there.

about the hardware shaders, i read somewhere that it actually worked opposite of the way you suggested. i'll change it and give it a go though, you're probably right.

The above is really useful but I am still confused with some of the settings and performance options for ATI cards. Is the Config.ini file the determining factor on graphics and performance?

Also, the IL2 set up menu has a number of checkboxes and if these are checked incorrectly will there be conflicts with the .ini file? e.g, I thought Arbmultiexture be checked only if using S3TC compression and what should the other options be set at?

Then there is the ATI Catalyst 3D settings (which confuses me even more). Should these be checked to let the application decide or should the sliders be set to a particular position? I noticed that I get frame tearing but this disappears if I force vertical Sync to ON but this then seems to reduce FPS.

In a nutshell, where do you start with determining the best compromise between FPS and optimised graphics for ATI cards given that there is a setup menu, the catalyst Control Centre and the Config.ini. A 'duffers guide' and 'stickied' would be a great idea........
