Yes, you're right, it was a very rare situation.
What wasn't rare, though, was for fire, which has gotten into the cockpit, to be pushed into the pilots face by the mask because the mask acted as a human blow torch  Scary stuff. Turning off the oxygen supply to the mask would help stop this
