Googling 'flax field image' will result in hundreds of similar pictures. I'd say that Oleg has got the colur about right, though how much flax was grown in SE England during the BoB period I've no idea. Does anyone have a contact in the Ministry of Agriculture?

Flax production increased from 400 acres in 1939 to 53000 acres in 1943.

Linseed oil (made from flax seeds) was used to make wood paint, and was used for oiling/preserving wood.

It seems there was a demand for it in 1940:
