There are no hidden roads so to speak. It's just hard to find some of them, and others open up when a particular mission takes you there.

This may be a small bug that most of us didn't notice. I use that truck mostly too. It may not be limited to just that truck. I'll keep an eye on it. However, it looks like you have found a feasible way to correct it.
