With reference to the pic edited and posted by Major_Setback. The hedge rows around all the fields which are white in the screenshot would be varying shades of green but for the fields there would be a large variety of colours. The summer of 1940 was very hot and dry - there would be lots of lighter coloured fields in southern England as a result.

Thanks, Bolox!

From the pages you linked to:

"Also starting in late September Mk I IFF "Pipsqueak" began being introduced. Spitfire equipped with this had a wire which emerged from a small insulator just forward and towards the top of the red centre spot of the fuselage roundel running to the tip of the tailplane. "

and

"Also in late September and early October Spitfires started being fitted with Mk. I IFF equipment. This equipment received a signal transmitted from ground radar equipment and retransmitted it, creating a distinctive bright blip on the radar screen. The receiver and transmitter wires emerged from small insulators just in front of and slightly above the red centre spot of the fuselage roundels on both sides. The wires were anchored to the tailplane tips. "

I've never read about or heard of these before!
