Default Dover

Thanks for all your interest

I have a few more pics regarding Dover but with a military slant. Dover has had a military presence going back over a thousand years. This is a picture of the Roman watch-tower that overlooks the Channel.

Dover Castle was later built in about 1100 on the same site. The Castle has been updated over the Centuries, particularly when Napoleon threatened invasion during the late 18th and early 19th Centuries.

This is a view of Dover Harbour from the Castle grounds.

WW2 saw the Castle area upgraded to include Planning Rooms, Lookout Positions and defences.

Dover was shelled by German Artillery positioned on the French Coast about 20 miles away (32 km) from 1940 until 1944. This is a map of where shells and bombs fell. 2,226 shells fell on the town during this period.

Picture of a Pub I visited just to sample the Beer! The Church next door was destroyed by a shell but the Pub survived intact.

A German planning document for the invasion of Dover dated June 1940.

This is an original wartime notice advising dancers about shell and bomb procedures.

And here's a practice Dambuster's bomb displayed in the Castle museum.

That's all for now,
