The Hellcats, were used as a cover. Since the Japanese didn't have many fighters at Leyte (5 total maybe!?), the Hellcats never saw action. Just wanna clarify that. The air battle that took place at Leyte Gulf was the Battle off Samar between FM2 Wildcats, and the Japanese Battleships.

Seriously FOZ, if you want to know more about Leyte. Read "The Last of the Tin Can Sailors". It's all about Samar, and Leyte.

So if I'm following all of this, it sounds like McCampbell was stationed on one of the fleet carriers that didn't actually get to do much during the main Battle of Leyte Gulf. However, from the Wiki article it is clear that he was flying Hellcats during at least the Battle of Sibuyan Sea (24 Oct):

Looking further at the Wiki article on the battle, it does indeed seem that the Essex was in the force Halsey took north, not in the 7th Fleet. So, overall, McCampbell flew Hellcats at the Battle of Leyte Gulf, but he did not participate in the central action of the battle, the Battle of Samar.
