i like black widow.
I also like "widow maker" but i just like the name, it was named that for all the wrong reasons And for the benefit of soviet ace - the FW190 mostly abused the shitfire Ok the highlighted part is a tiny lie But on the whole, not many hurricanes were destroyed by the 190. |

Another cool name is the "Zero". Funny how it was more than a "Zero". |

We had hurricanes in the african theatre throughout the war. As a fighter at first because it could hold its own against the 109E, but then later models started to surface and also the italian planes and the hurricane was out matched. They had hurricanes escorting hurricanes, for example - for were patrolling or attacking, with 4 flying top cover protecting them. The lufwaffe would slughter the hurricane in africa after 1940. But once the spitfires started turning up the hurricane found a new role as a "hurribomber" and left the dogfighting to the spitfire. In 40-41 the 190 was far superior to everything we had, it was so much better than the current spitfires. Only when the IX started showing up did the 190 have a fair fight on its hands. Maybe i like the hurricane so much because it does the role i prefer to do in flying game... ground attack, yet the ability to dogfight if need be. I guess i always liked the hrrucane since i wa a young boy, when everyone used to adore the spitfire, yet the hurricane used to sit on the side lines rather neglected. All i say is - let the fan boys have their shitfire |

Yeah I've taken a liking to the Hurricane, though I always have like the Hurricane since watching the Battle of Britain. But since learning about the Yak-3, and other Soviet planes. I've grown more towards them, obviously.
Downside to the Hurricane, is its canopy. I don't like having all that metal around me. lol |

I'd nominate the Blackburn "Roc" as the worst name for a fighter. The aircraft was incredibly ugly and was unstable with a top speed of 220 MPH.
Imagine Jo Brand as a fighter plane and you'll have some idea as to how ugly this aircraft was. If you find a picture online, keep a sickbag handy. Basically a Skua dive bomber with a turret added to turn it into something like the Boulton-Paul "Defiant". The Roc was used to defend Bermuda from Luftwaffe bombers. Fortunately, after the loss of 169 squadron's Defiants in one single action, during the BoB, the RAF scrapped plans for a turreted Hurricane, the Hawker "Hotspur". The sixteen gunned Hawker "Tornado" was also scrapped about the same time. The P-66 Vultee "Vangard" isn't exactly an awe inspiring name. Fortunately only Canadians (training) and the Chinese (combat) flew them. Least original name for a fighter has to be the Wackett C-13 "Boomerang", bearing in mind that it was designed and made by Australians. I still think that the "Hellcat" and "Wildcat" have the best names for a fighter aircraft. |

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, since this thread is a frakkin' long but the...
F-4 Phantom and also the Wild Weasel, always thought that was the perfect name as far as imagery for it's mission. |
