Your sure number 2 is the wildcat?

I don't doubt you because i know next to nothing on this theatre, but i remember watching some documentary and im certain its the hellcat he flew and got all his victories in.

The hurricane Mk1 didnt have 12 MG's either, they stuck with 8. the 12 guns were implemented into the MkII series, because a new reinforced wing could handle that many guns in the wing (as well as rockets/bombs/drop tanks)

Yes. The only US fighters at Leyte Gulf, were the US Navy FM2 Wildcats which flew off of the "Truck Carriers". F4Fs were kinda phased out in 44'. And Grumman started to focus on F6Fs and such, while GM created the FM1-2-3s (which 3s were just a prototype that I don't think actually got off the paper?)

The battle for sibuyan sea (part of leyte gulf yes?) the japanese fleet was sighted and attacked by torpedo bombers and dive bobmers aswell as fighters... hellcats. Im sure i distinctivly remember this.

I just dont have strong knowledge of this theatre at all so to be honest i dont have a leg to stand on. Im prob wrong though. I just remember thinking how odd it was that hellcats were straffing ships with MG's etc.

Im not doubting you one bit, you clearly know what your talking about and as i've said i really know nothing of this theatre other than what i've seen on tv as it doesnt really interest me as much as the european theatre.

Maybe the hellcats and wildcats both flew here?

Somewhere between part 1-5, it mentions FM2 Wildcats, at the Battle off Samar. That's where the Yamamoto, took on the Truck Carriers, and Destroyer Escorts, along with some other small ships. Kinda amazing actually.

So it was the hellcat then? thought it was, but didnt wish to push the subject as i know next to nothing about it.

It only mentions his achievement of being an "Ace in a Day" during the Marianna's Turkey Shoot which had nothing to do with the invasion of Leyte. Both of those took part in two different areas of the Pacific.

If you read the book, "Last of the Tin Can Sailors", then you'll know that no F6F Hellcats took part in Leyte because Leyte was a diversion/bluff. And that it was just to try and see what the Japanese Navy was doing. The video I gave, will explain it better than I can at the moment. (Another 4hrs of over time is killing me. )

EDIT: Here is the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Read over the Battle off Samar section, and the whole thing for that matter. It mentions FM2s, not F6Fs.
