Four million bucks on a game that probably barely cost a half million to make given that the game engine and base models were already in place...id say they made a profit and gave them a platform to build on for a sequel. If they fix all of the multiplayer problems and actually market the game I would say we are in for a nice golden age of console simming!
Once again.
Game has it's own engine and technology, made specially for this game. Did you ever seen such detailed flightsim before?
All aircraft or ladnscape models were made for this title. PC Il-2 have incomparable level of detail - all of them were done years ago for outdated technology.
Thats about your wrong suggestions about content and game.
Also half of million for game for both X360 and PS3 title is ridiculous suggestion. I do not know any title made with such budget for both platforms with any quality. Not with quality of BoP I mean but any.
Also you are wrong with your calculations. Part of money are taken by sellers, part by platform holders, and manufacture. And those parts in sum are more then a half.

One more thing about money. Publisher will start sequel only if they get, let's say 2 or 3 of production+marketing budgets back. Because this is their buisiness - not all games are profitable and they want to get not only these risks but profit.

And the last point - developers are not publishers. That means a lot of things but in terms of royalties developers are the last link of chain.

Let's talk about game, not about money, please. Your opinions about game are much more interesting for us and much more useful.

It is not depends on us.
We - ourselves - can not release even DLC or title update on our own. So it is completely publisher's decision.
Right now, we are talking publisher to make DLCs with our own money, self-funded, and release them (and get royalties), so that's not about we don't want to. Nothing decided yet.
We'll keep you updated.

Making sequel, on the other hand, is something we can do on our own.

Right now it is still not enough money to get royalties, if that was you ask for. It is about 200k copies sold (according to vgchartz).
However, extrapolation is rather good.
Game was just released in Germany, and it is still less than month from UK release.
In any case - developer is last link in a royalties chain, so publisher will definetly get money he invested with a reasonable (100-200%) margin.
Game business is risky one, so margin should be bigger than that to allow developer to get his royalty - but it is already OK for us to make sure someone (this publisher or other) would like to publish our game.

And there is PSN/XBL in the end.
