RAM , get 4 GB as above, but specify 2x2GB leaving 2 slots open for future.
You will want 32 bit OS for now, but the 64 bit as a standard is near. Maybe have it set up as dual boot, for use as 32 bit and 64 bit boots. Be sure nothing but the OS gets installed as your base, add only what is absolutely necessary after that.
