Where do I raise attributes at level-up?

Manual says:
Aside from experience the player may raise parameters (they mean attributes) when gaining a leave, visiting certain places etc..

Don't I get a choice of which attributes to raise?
When I level up, is say gained Leadership +20 and that's it. I don't see an option either at the level up screen nor the character screen to increase anything...

I hope I'm just stupid, blind, or something else.. Help mehhh!!

On the side note, how do I "Cancel" a spell or dragon ability? Sometimes I want to verify troop's health after I click "Fireball", say, but I can't undo. Cursor stays in "Wand" form and question mark doesn't appear so I can left-click to examine.
