Mage low on mana constantly

I just started on this game a few hours ago, not counting all the time spent reading dialogue...
And I cant seem to generate enough mana, unless I stand still five minutes before each fight.
I get none in combat yet, I'm level 6 and I can sail to three islands at the moment.
I play on hard, and I just barely can mana the fights without losing more than a few. Actually I like it that way, not too easy

But what should I do this early to get more mana regen?
I need crystals for the Meditation skill, so close vn getting that. But what other ways?
