A good game with some huge flaws.

Yeah, I too agree. It may be how the developers wanted it to be. This is a very good game and a lot interesting one.

About surprises, there are some small elements in game which surprise the player. Only bonus rewards could have been implemented. And one thing i noted, the way we follow to complete the quests does not really change the gameplay (like killing the ghost instead of baron), some rewards are lost and may be a little experience...
