Nice, good to see some activity still, though in the evenings in my timezone (Pacific) most of those servers are fairly dead.

Here's what I know about the ones listed here:

Skies-of-Valor: closed pit but with external views, stock. Sometimes they experiment with no external views. Very good historical maps, missions, and plane-sets, lots of good pilots. Too bad they're still 4.12.

AleXserver: closed pit with external views, stock. Limited number of maps without real objectives. Plane-sets are not historical, they're of the "all axis planes of a given year vs all allied planes of a given year" type. Small maps and still decent crows means you can have a lot of fun on this server for a while, but eventually the limited number of maps and unimaginative plane-sets will bore you.

IRSS dogfights. Open pit "Air-Quake" type of server. Good for reactive players as opposed to thinking ones. Try it if you want to get into a quick fight, test some new planes or maneuvers, check your turn-and-burn and get-out-of trouble abilities. Don't stay too long or the wonder-woman view will spoil your gunnery.

Frontovoe Nebo (Skies over the Front). Full switch (except for speedbar) war campaign server, stock. Register on their website (il2.org.ru, it's in Russian, Google Translate is your friend) and take part in Eastern Front "wars" that last several weeks. Your personal success will determine your rank and the quality of planes available to you, your side's success will determine the number of airfields available to you on a map and will influence your personal score too. Very engaging server, good for all sorts of pilots: high-alt bombers, ground-pounders, dog-fighters. There are recon and bomber escort missions too. Unfortunately the servers is down with technical issues quite often, and they had some bugs when they introduced 4.13 that may not have been resolved yet.

Stenka_war. I have not tried this one but I heard it's a lot like Frontovoe Nebo except it requires a mod.

Battle-fields.com. They had two servers, one open-pit and one closed-pit. They both had well designed maps, plane-sets, friendly mods and players. Not sure which one is still up, but you could probably fly closed-pit in the open pit server if you wanted, it's not Air-Quake, you wouldn't be at too much of a disadvantage.
