Without preplanning, yes, otherwise, not necessarily.
I was particularly fortunate with my Viking/Warrior build as I had Slippery Cuirass and Twinkling Boots PLUS Shield of Rage.
This was not one of my shining moments in KB history, as the battle took over 100 rounds. I prefer much faster battles by far.
If you don't have Shield of Rage, this battle could take much longer.
This is where three separate stacks of troll is better. You keep trolls in the corner where they can only be hit by 2 spider stacks. You keep one 'weak' spider stack adjacent to one troll and the stack that gets "retaliated" against is the "dangerous" one.
You always attack the spider if he is in your corner.
Even when the spiders get up to 400 or so, as long as you 'defend' that round against the spider minions, you should be fine unless you are in melee against the spider boss (ergo, you need to recasting stoneskin and magic spring).
The spider's ranged "magic" attack is weaker, so you can tend to survive. Unfortunately, without Shield of Rage, the 'bad morale' curse might let a troll die that round.
Single 3 troll stack works with shield of rage fairly well, but I think when I did it, shield of rage was bugged (removed too often) and your problem is getting to the spider boss after he moves from one location to another AND getting webbed.
That said, I might go for the "beat spider boss in 10 round" achievement instead next time around. I was worried I would never find trolls again or I would use them immediately afterwards.
Neither ended up being true as I found over 230+ trolls later on and I was relying on horsemen was my meatshield, attacker, AND interceptor.
