I would prefer the hd 7970 over the gtx 680 at any time. I am running it too and for a game like clod, a card with large ram is always a better solution to run it fully stable. In my setup, the card uses up to 2,7 GB ram, which isn't possible for the gtx680.
Although Iwas positively surprised from the performance of the gtx 680, I think of some major disadvantages in my eyes.
1.) not enough ram (the 4GB version will be extremely expensive).
2.) missing gpgpu units or abilities by far not up to date (the card is a quickly released and not fully featured fanboy catcher, although it runs very good).
3.) the bios is not able or was not able to provide u with all feature. I think of a fanboy, who wrote, that this card is fast as hell with its pci-e 3.0 (?) support and that this makes the top edge. But he was stopped by some guys, that found out, that the 3.0 support cannot be activated, although they already had the suitable mainboards for it. (correct me, if I am wrong with this in the meantime).
I cannot say, that this is the wrong card, as I am somehow also a nvidia guy and had my problems with the catalyst and its quality at the release of the 7970. In the meantime, some issues concerning the bad shadow drawing by ati is solved (i had really bad dynamic shadows with older catalysts until 12.4 and also wondered, why nobody saw it, although their videos showed the same issues, e.g. in BF3).
Last but not least I think, that the upcoming big kepker will have all features and will hit ati hard. But they will also have some value to buy it.
For my upcoming 27" triple monitor setup, there is no doubt, that the ati will perform way better than on low resolution 1080p!!! We had more resolution 10 years ago!!
