The idea of getting a battery of machine guns on the back wasn't actually new, you're right
But the Bristol fighter had forward firing machine guns; it was conceived as a pure fighter, (the forward MGs being the primary weapons) while the Defiant had all its armament on its back, and was conceived as an anti-bomber.
A new idea in fighter design development.

We all know how things went wrong with it... but I've always liked weird looking planes of that era.
I have a soft spot for the Roc too I must admit, and the Fulmar, the Whitley, the Hampden.
How they say it... "beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
