Of course with much more detailed plane components modeled, the final hit calculations will be slightly more demanding, and that's where the real progress of the damage model will be, not in visual bullet holes.
As damage decals seem to be a quality setting it's possible they were disabled here. That cumulative damage is still represented by more generic damage textures should be a non-brainer - nobody calculates physically correct deformation of rigid bodies in real time.
