SR1: Finding better engines?
 

So I'm just starting up on Space Rangers 1, and I'm finding I would like better engines. I found a basic version of the phase drive, with the 450 speed, and 24 parsec jump limit.

What sort of places should I look for to find better engines than that, and what conditions start them spawning? At the moment, I seem to be doing reasonably well this time; I'm earning about 2k a courier mission, and this map is laid out so I can reach most of the systems with 1-2 jumps through safe space, but there doesn't seem to be much to buy with it at the moment that is much better than the starter stuff.

Engine prototypes usually spawn on Gaalian planets, often around the Kraa system.
Buy the newest or second-newest engine (much cheaper) from time to time and improve it at a science station, it should last you a while.
