Hornets Nest Help
First Time Poster here! Just got the game today and got snagged on Hornets nest. The IL-2 is not the best at knocking down hoards of JU-52's. The best I have done is 4 left before they reach their destination. Any tips or assistance would be greatly appreciated from u guys. Let me know if I am missing something. I have been reading these posts for a while now and it seems there is quite a few knowledable people here so I thought this would be a great place to ask for some help. Thanks again for any help u can give me!

Welcome to the forum Red Dog. Your lucky, Currently only a few people here have the game so you might have to wait for people to catch up with you in the campain before you get an answer.
|
Sorry, can't be much help, I'm still on the Battle of Britain. But I'm trying to spread things out so it lasts me longer, lol.
Whenever I get to the mission I'll be sure to throw in any input I might have though. :) |
Thanks Matt, Let me know when ya get there!

OK! Got er Done! It was just a matter of time. I did all of the above but it just wasn't quite enough. Time pays off I just wasn't sure there wasn't some trick to the whole thing. That was a pain in a$$ mission! Great game though so far except for the white gun reticle. Very hard to see when against the ground and clouds. Wish they could have made it red. Tried the online and it was fun but very hard to shoot others down due to the reticle. Give it some time and practice and who knows. I look forward to chatting with everyone here! Hit me up sometime guys! Thanks agian for your help!

Theres a trick to everything, and that is hard work builds skill and experience, so you might not realise you achieved something, but instinctively the more you play the better you will always get.

Hornet's Nest
Well i was stuck on Hornet's nest but thanks to you alls help i beat it, Thanks!!!
|
the transports
i too have trouble on this mission because i can't find them . are there any tricks to locating the transport planes?

Usually I just fly low near the ground, keep my eyes around the sky, and if I see a formation, I usually go for it. And also, you can just order your wingmen to attack the main objective ie Ju-52s, and they'll go after them easy. They shouldn't be hard to spot in the moon light, if your lower then they are.

Simple answer: Yes :D

Hello Fella's, just got the game yesterday and have read through the post's above, enjoying it but am struggling with this mission, the best i have done is shot down 22 planes and then the fail mission message comes up after about 8mins 20secs ish. How many transports are there to shoot down?
I have used my wingmen to intercept but they are useless (they seem to take forever to get a kill). Any info is much appreciated |

just out of curiosity, what difficulty are you trying to beat this level on?

Sorry for being a nOOb LOL  |

It just means newbie, but on the wonderful world of the internet it's almost a cuss word!;) We all have to start somewhere, don't we? I'm on the same mission right now and having a fairly difficult time with it, (yes,i too play on arcade!) The wingmen are quite useless indeed, they take so long to make a kill, that i just keep ordering them, because i keep thinking my order didn't register..but,hey any and all help should be used,so i use them as much as possible! Mostly the bomber squads (slower planes) and transport planes are being escorted by fighters. So,yeah you should check if there are any fighters, i can't remember if they are escorted in this particular mission..but the transports are easy to recognize since they always fly in squads. and have a yellow nametag or sign or whatever it's called. just check the names on the planes, watch for clusters and firewall them. the IL-2 also sports rockets, and while it's fairly hard to get a hit with them, when lined up perfectly,it's definetly possible to hit the transports with it (i managed to take out an entire squad with three rockets and a firewall ! Just spam the rocket button while you firewall with machineguns and ignore the groundtargets. I almost made it,but one squad keeps getting away! |
Yeah, no need to apologize!
The reason I asked was that I have beat that mission and I am also playing at arcade level. I had no problem beating this level. I never gave any commands and just shot down as many as I could and my men got the rest. |

You have to concentrate your attacks, on the ones that are closest to the target area. I made that mistake the first time, but then I quickly realized what happened. So don't go for the one's that are far from their target, wait for them to get closer, and while you wait. Blast them with everything you've got. :D
|
I was having a rough time with this one.
as soviet ace said, always WEP to your closest transport formation (check on map), u can usually nail one as your fly towards it, then swing round behind the plane at the rear of the formation. match their speed and use the rudder to spray them left to right. moving to the front as your destroy each one. this way you're not constantly turning the big slow IL2 to get planes that are just behind you. |

Thanks for all your help Fella's, done it , the key is to do it quickly as you dont get much time before they reach the airstrip. Thanks again :):):) |
i am having trouble with the figthers after u shoot the ju52 down a mob of 109s tear me up first try i cant get em i have like 4 shooting at me at once

You can do it!
I know how a lot of people feel about this mission – after several fairly easy missions this one comes along and “BAM”, it’s 10 times harder! I have spoken to many pilots on line and basically it comes down to this - skill, the seasoned pilots get on their targets and take them down rapidly and move onto the next wave of bombers with no screw-ups, the IL 2 that your flying is so slow that if you have to break off and chase down just one run away bomber you will run out of time, you might as well restart and try again – don’t even bother to continue. I am new to flight Sims and it took me a good part of yesterday to beat this mission, good thing I was off for Labor Day! I also read the great advice above from Soviet Ace (Thanks by the way Ace) which helped tremendously. Don’t worry, you’ll get it, just remember it is all about speed and precision…and the bright side of all of this is that when you do finally beat this mission – you will be a better pilot!

|
i can't get past his level.
i have played it about 10 times now...i have shot down as many as 35 ju's. wtf? i'm about to give up. i dont allow any ju planes to land, and then i'm on a group and get the ol mission failed everytime. it's pissing me off...i want to move on and keep playing, but i can't. do i need to shoot the ground targets? i have tried it, but doesnt seem to help much. |

As another poster put it I had 28 shot down and was told "mission failed...." This has to be the most frustrating mission yet, the inteligence for this mission is not up to the same as previous missions. Since when has JU52's had rearward firing machine guns? |

Thanks Merro I stand corrected.
|
i passed it on sim had trouble with figrthers after the ju52's what helped me was going tree top lvl n telling my guys to defend me then i start a really tight turn staying at tree top intwoward the me109's not at em and then they should fly past u hopefully missing most their shots some how they got distracted attacking or defending with my wingmen and i got to a chance to bomb the guns theirs only 2 i think.... hopefully it will help i barely scraped by.........
|
Well on the 360, you press down and then right on the D-pad to order your entire wing to engage the Ju's. Once thats done you need to pick a start point on the edge of a flight and "walk" the guns along all 3 planes. When done right, you will take them all out in one 3-5 second burst. Rinse and repeat for the rest of the flight.
|
After several mission failures I finally cleared the sky of transports (26 in all) but the mission didn't end. The yellow target indicator suggested that there was one more enemy aircraft off my radar but it's impossible to reach as is it is outside the battlefield map.
Has this happened to anyone else and if so is there a solution? Any help much appreciated. |
I dunno tbh. When I did it, I actually got a mission complete and I let a couple of the first flight get away iirc. Maybe try flying back to the battlezone, and hanging around a bit. Some of the missions for me Ive had to wait around a bit on the mission complete message.
|
Don't go chasing the bombers let them come to you in the battle zone then take them out.
|
ok...i've shot down 34 ju's and i still fail this mission. what am i doing wrong?!
where is this air field? hello everyone btw!! |
The nest is hard!
Hi all,
this is one tough mission. Just like an end of level boss in Killzone on the PSP. Still battling on and will try your suggestions. What a fantastic game though? PFC Noskcaj! |
Quote:
I think that we have to shot down all the plane. I failed one time. One of the rare mission where we have also to rely one our wingmans to finish the job and find some junkers that you let pass through. Don't forget to ask them to go on the objectives (Command down and then up) |
i keep getting that happen to me.......... gonna give up soon.....

It seems that some of you have problems to go through that mission on Arcade mode.
I recommend to go on realistic/sim. Because You don't have to shoot more than 10 bombers (even less) in those modes (for sim I'm sure because I did it that way; but not for realistic but it is certainly the same) If you got problems with stalls with your pad. Reduce Elevator sensibility (reduce by half, normally 10/18 it's perfect). Even more if it's too much complicate. You don't need manoeuvrability in that mission Hope it will help |
Quote:
No wonder! In arcade mode you have to shoot down well over 20! All right - for those of you having problems try realistic mode (turn down your elevators at least half way to keep you from stalling) and let us know if this helps. |
hi
hi all
i am new to this, i have been stuck on this airfield hornets nest for 2 weeks any help |
Hi Guys
I did what you said, switched to realstic used my wingmen. And the result is ....Im no longer on Hornets Nest. Never had a mission test me like that b4 Thanks Guys Cookie |
Congrats Bravissimo. Prepare for Sicily now ;)
|
OK, some people suggest to switch from Arcade to Realistic or Sim. But how can I do this? I have only Arcade mode and I cannot switch it. What am I missing?

Hornts nest solved
Greetings all.
My first post on the forum. Wish to thank all for the posts regarding solving the Hornets nest mission. I struggled with this in arcade mode for long. Switched to realistic and solved it on the 2nd attempt. Shot down some 4 or 5 JU, avoided the 109s and finally took out 1 ground object.... MISSION COMPLETED :grin::grin::grin::grin::grin::grin: I am ready for more.... |

I first went thru campain and single missions in realistic mode and had alot of trouble with a few levels (this one included), got stuck on em big time, some even for a few days, to finally succeed the missions without having done anything specific or different from my previous attemps, to my knowledje. Sure feels good to finally get the msg "mission completed" after being stuck on something for so long, but kinda feels weird when u have absolutly no clue on what u did right this time around u kno. Now I'm at the point where i've finished campaign and almost done with single missions in som mode, the only ones remaining giving me the same trouble i had in realistic mode... so instead of cussing at friendly a.i. for days being stuck on the same missions, i just put them aside until patch come in, cause i'm pretty sure this has to do with a bug in a.i. |

They say there will b an friendly/enemy a.i. "upgrade" or something in the patch, so im pretty sure this will cover these kinds of issues: where in some random missions ur wingmen cant seem to b able to do squat, and in others they do pretty much all the work for ya... |

like i said, i got through campaign and sm in realistic despite these "glitches", but in sim, i just didnt find the patience to give 'em those 10+ tries to finally succeed without having done anything different, thought i'd do them once the patch arrives |
I'm glad I didn't realize that this mission was so hard on arcade when I first started playing. I guess I got it on the 9th or 10th try. I have to admit it took me longer on Sim until I figured out how to spot the Ju-52's. I also plead guilty to firing rockets into the transports to expedite matters.

hornets nest???
Yes , this is the hardest one yet and will just have to keep trying till I get them all own. Thanks everyone for all the info on here.

Hard work? I'd tried it many times and shot between 11 and 14 plains. No succes

Play this mission on realistic. It's a lot easier then, ironically.

I'm sure you BoP vets are sick of seeing this thread pop up just when you'd hoped it was dead and buried. Before I go any further, I want to say howdy to everyone. OK, I'm bound and determined to complete this mission on Sim, even if it kills me. It's encouraging to read some folks here have done just that, even if they say they haven't a clue why they were successful. I've tried some of the tips I've read here but I still fail. My next plan is to crank up the brightness on the monitor as was suggested by one poster. I will post my findings for those who are interested.
|
Just completed the mission from hell. I made it more hell than it should have been though. I checked the brightness in the game settings and found it was cranked all the way down. Adjusted that and could finally see the bombers. On my successful mission, I managed to down a few bombers myself all the while constantly ordering my team to attack. I assumed we downed them all because I was then ordered to attack the AA at the airfield. I destroyed just one with a bomb and the Mission Complete message came up on the screen. Like others here I was very relieved. I now plan on completing the campaign before signing up for XboxLive Gold and playing online. I am signed up with Silver. My gamertag is gorpley.

Passing this one on arcade.
Somethings really helped: Rockets! Rockets! Around .50 to 1 km, rockets that hit can take down whole flights. I've tagged 2-3 while shooting them in conjunction with cannons / mg's. Planning out the flights so that finishing passes end up close to firing position on another group or finishing a group puts you close to incoming groups, I lost on set because I was chasing too far, and using the map function generously. That said, Get that lone group before they get close. Sometimes I get goldfish memory in the heat of battle and forget I left a set unattended. While using attention all flight and carry out objectives, also use attack as a group to get the transports that are getting close. All 3 can take down a target fast. Regrouping alot. Sometimes your wing gets dragged all over the place. Rear attacks while slowing throttle and the IL-2's heavy firepower gives you time to aim (and use rockets) are best. I preferred to do a head on pass and give them everything I had, chandelle around cut throttle and take them down. Careful shooting when Yaks are around, especially if sending rockets out. On my game the Yaks (blue) really help alot, and I found out undiscriminating shooting sometimes tagged a Yak. Search the skies around the yellow dots while closing in. I found out some transports aren't yellow tagged. The transports stay as a flight, even if attacked. The exception is when they get close to the runway, they will separate (one will begin to land) but if you're at this point and the Yaks haven't shot them down, mission fail is around the corner. Watch out, once the last transport goes down, you get victory and get your new objectives (bomb ground targets). 109s arrive and they are pissed! They will go for you even with 3 Yaks on their tail. Don't have your wing cover you, they'll get shot down. Dealing with stealth transports: What makes it really hard on arcade, is that some of the transports don't show up with the yellow tags (or red tags). And these were fresh ones, I ain't talking about the ones the game considers shot down (pilot kill) and flying around before the crash and removes your targeting, I'm talking about legit flying I'm gonna end your mission suka targets. That said, you can target them even though they don't show up on radar / map. They'll have the standard red arrow (and show up on radar) once you do. If you run into a whole flight (rare but happens) target one so it red dots. Then look for the others and shoot them down. The transport don't separate, so targeting one will help keep track of the flight's position. Shoot down the target one last. I saw some back lit on the search lights. Others you can see you're below them around 2, 4, 8, 10 o clock positions. Others I found the Yaks (blue dots) were shooting and circling around some random space of the sky, and closer inspection found it was a transport. In some cases I've noticed the Yaks will go after them if they get close. Your guys will not attack them if they are given objective command. If you target and group all or attack target, your flight will do so. They fly the same pattern as the yellow groups. Sometimes they are found in stacked between the larger yellow groups. On realistic they have the stealth ones, but since you fulfill the objective quickly by knocking down the yellows they aren't a factor. |

Add me to this list as well. After trying what seemed like a gazillion times on Arcade, I switched to Realistic as suggested, and completed the Mission on the second try! AWESOME!!! |

I shoot down 28-34 planes and still fail (on Arcade)... |
Wow, I completed the whole game on arcade in 2 days without any trouble at all. I crashed into the ground with the P51D 2 times on the Battle of the bulge missions, due to its ridiculously higher turning radius than the other planes (?), but that was it.
I completed Hornet's Nest on the first try, and can't see why anyone would have trouble with it. Maybe I was just lucky, and this mission is glitchy... The game was too easy on arcade, but I just wanted to play it through once, to unlock planes and see if any mission is worth replaying on a higher difficulty later. |

It took 4 attempts and ended up shooting down only six transports and bombed maybe five-six gun's on the ground... way easier on Realistic than Arcade where on one attempt I shot down 38 transports and still failed... go figure. |
Tactics for Hornets Nest
The trick here is to make use of the other pilots in your flight. If you all attack just one formation and then all move on to the next you will run out of time. You need to tell your pilots to attack one group and you go off and attack another group. As you and your squadron begin to kill off the JUs you will notice 2 of them head for the edge of the map – you need to catch these guys – you chase one and instruct your other squad members to chase the other (you taking the nearest one). You must get to yours before it disappears off the map otherwise your done for; however your other pilot can chase their JU off the map. Just wait until he shoots it down (which may be off the map) then you can move on.
