what 3 aircraft would you take.....
If you had a hanger, and somebody said to you that you could have any 3 WW2 aircraft of your choice to place in that hanger to do with as you please... what would you take and why? In no particular order i'd have
Hakwer Hurricane - She a real lady, and a work horse. A beautiful plane. Would have it in the markings of the BBMF hurricane at the mo (YB-W) Avro Lancaster - An absolutely incredible bomber and a joy to see fly, my grandad was a rear gunner in them during the war flying with 50 squadron. Whats not to like. Id take VN-B as the markings, it was the code for his bird ;) De Havilland Mosquito - The wooden wonder, an truly remarkable piece of machinery who performance was incredible. Give it a job to do... it'll do it well!! Can't fault it :) I do like the B25 Mitchell, but opted for the mossie instead :) so guys, what you take given the chance? |
My choices would be:
Bf-109 G- For it is one of the most beautifull aircraft of WWII B-17 G- 13 machine guns, and armour to take a whole lot of damage!! He-111- This plane is just candy for the eyes and is a joy to fly! |
must admit i do like the HE111 but could never figure out why!! just something about it.....
your sig btw... sounds like robert shaw in the film "battle of britain" ;) |
P-51D Mustang - Scort Master
P-38 Lightining - Best Twin Engine of WWII. B-29 Superfortress - Incoming bombs... |
Yak-3
La-5FN Spitfire Mk IX In that order. |
Lancaster- but I'd rather have a Shackleton as my late father was a navigator on them
Spit- a two seater trainer so I could share with my son... And a Mosquito- just to make sure there will always be one flying... ________ Hotbox vaporizer |

Asd for the mossie... one in new zealand (poss australia)and possibly here in the uk that are getting made air worthy again, but dont expect to see this anytime soon. Could be a while off yet. Not heard about them for quite a while so they could have scrapped them plans now.. :( prob with restoring a mossie is the difficulty in restoring the airframe. |

B17-G Flying Fortress. - I can fly to germany in it without stopping.
ME-163 Komet - I like to live dangerously. Desford - you won't have heard of this, because there was only ever 1 in existence, it was a recon plane, a prone pilot test plane, and a bombardier training plane. It had a double spitfire cockpit, with a twin boom like an ME-110. it also had a plexi-glass nose cone similar to a B-17 but smaller. it was once shot at over ireland because it was mistaken for an ME-110. there is one left in existence and it is in storage, in bits, in a warehouse at Snibston Discovery Park, Coalville, Leicestershire, England. I used to work there, and its a marvelous piece of engineering, and very little info on it. but its been painted silver and yellow for training, green camo for recon, and whatever colour experimental planes get painted for the prone piloting setup as it was to see if prone piloting reduced G-forces on pilots, ready for Jet training. it also had a hurricane cockpit dial setup. as either reid or sigrist worked with Hawker. Ill try and find an image, but i doubt i will, i lost my research notes along time ago. :) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi.../7f/RS.4-1.jpg R.S.4 Bobsleigh. is its official title, and there is a picture. painted silver and another painted camo. ONLY one ever made. http://www.1000aircraftphotos.com/Co...ville/7989.jpg |
A top 3 is difficult and I change my mind on this one regularly (Often depending on what model kit I'm building at the time). At the moment it would be:
De Havilland Mosquito FB VI Messerschmitt BF109 K-4 Supermarine Spitfire XIV (bubble top) |
wow thats one ugly looking plane!! lol

P-51 this thing is so damn beautifull P-47 the jug also a good plane that can take a punishment ME-262 fast and furious plane that could have been the saving plane for the luftwaffe |
262 eh...not bad.
|
ME-262, but without awful engines...
BF 109-E4 FW190D9 |
Martin-Baker MB-5
DeHavilland Mosquito Mk IV Focke-Wulf TA-152H-1 ....off the top of my head. There are, undoubtedly, others. LJB:cool: |
mine hmm
N1K Shiden J7W Shinden A6M2 Zero awful but beautiful |

his best line was when the german POW's were on the airfield....... Robert shaw: "Where are you taking those vultures?" RAF NCO: "Officers to the mess, NCOs to the guard room, Sir." Robert shaw: "Like hell you are. They're responsible for all that (turning and gesturing to the ruined field), get 'em to clear it up!" NCO: "But, what about the officers, Sir?" Robert shaw: "Give them a bloody shovel!" Classic!! |
Geeze, No love for the F4Us?
Mine would be the 1) F4U-C 2) P-51D 3) F7F (Tiger Cat) |
Me-262 Sure the engines had short life and a bad temper but damn good looking.
B-17 Missing half a wing and/or tail? no problem, you will still make it back. Zero Just on the list as it would be a fun acrobatics aircraft and long range. |

262 - alot like it :) doesnt do it for me though, its just not right lol. i like my warbirds. B17 - yup she'll get you home on a couple of engines, tail missing, and shot up alot. Nice choice!! Zero - glad its not in the game!! dont want to dogfight one of them at all!! :-P |
I'd just take a spit, an me262, and one of the rumoured-but-never-proved german flying disc's :p
|

Me? Fw190D9 Bf109K Spitfire MkII |

Fw190D, curiousity here on my part...how come the D? 109 - dont mind flying it, but would panic on take off and landing lol :-P spit - |
Let me pick one from each country, just to be different:
1) LANCASTER 2) P-51 3) IL-2 (A-10A of its day) Sorry, but i really have no respect for Japanese aircradt, theirs just a feeling i have for them that makes me hate them. |
Does the Me-262 engines flame out if you throttle up too quickly? Is there a prolonged restart on the engines? Can you control the engines individually?
THAT would be cool, as the origional Jumo 004B's were a biotch in flight/combat. It would keep you from running roughshead over your piston engined opponents. LJB:cool: |
Oh, the agony of choice! I'd love to fly a P-51, but they're the most common warbird, so I won't pick one of those. It's a similar situation with the P-40. Anyway, let's see:
1. F6F Hellcat - great, tough fighter. There are far too few left. 2. Ju-87 Stuka - Yeah, it was fighter fodder, but you gotta love that classic dive bomber (may have been overly influenced by the book Stuka Pilot) 3. A6M5 Zero - I know, most people hate it. But no one would be shooting at me, and it's great for acrobatics! Oddly enough, I'd really love to have a Mitsubishi G4M Betty Bomber. I have no idea why. |

Don't know about flameouts but in IL2 1946 they would very often be on fire if throttled up too quickly, seperate throttle for engine 1 and 2 yes, restarts could only be done while on the ground. |

Also amazing "Alright chaps help yourselves there's no fighter escort." |

And, as good as the ZERO is, doesn't it also have a really low role rate. |
1) SM 79
2) Reggiane Re 2005 3) Fiat G 55 and... original decal on all luftwaffe planes... this decal "politically correct" is stupid. |
"Did anyone see my Heinkel?"
"Didn't know you were with us old boy!" 1) Spitfire - all of them, they are all aircraft porn! 2) P51 - Classic lines plus the whistling of the guns when they dive. 3) BF109G - Looks so purposful, would make for a nice comparison. |
P-51D - for fast fun, and beauty
Fi Storch - for low and slow (scenic flights and landing on mountain tops) C-47 - to carry a bunch of stuff around :) |
1. avro lancaster 2. spitfire 3. stuka
|
Some excellent choices!!! some suprise packages to!!
|
1: Spitfire: they all are just beautiful feats of engineering and beauty
2: Avro Lancaster: Such an elegant bomber and the best at what it did, i would marry one (Against the courts objections) 3:109's: The perfect match for the spitfire, a glorious plane |
B-25J Mitchell- Just a great looking plane that has proven it can perform just as well
Hurricane- I prefer it over the Spit, I think it handles better, and it's got the ability to carry torpedoes and bombs, which is always a plus with me. Those are my top two essentials, for my third I could go with a lot, off the top of my head a few choices would be: P-51 Bristol Blenhiem B-17 Lancaster |
To many damned Englishmen on this forum!! :P Just kidding. (But there is a lot.)
Macchi MC. 202- The in-game version is very accurate with its speed and maneuverability. Yak-3- The in-game turns on a dime, which is great since the real one was just like it. Me-109F4- Great plane, light, well armed, and good high altitude fighter. |
1. P-51 D "Catch me if you can, then IF you do, you dont want none!"
2. P-38 Fast, Sleek, Range, and no one wants to be on the busisness end of that cannon. 3. bf 109 Proven killer, plus damn good looking plane. Alt... 1 Yak-9 Man that was just a cool plane, huge cannon. Love the Soviets!! Alt... 2 F. Swordfish Bring on the Bismark!! |
1. P-51D
2. Bf 109G 3. B-17G |

P-40 Warhawk. My personal favorite, and the coolest and most rugged fighter built!
F4U Corsair. Another cool looking plane, successful as all hell and of course Baa Baa Black Sheep! B-17G. How many fighters thought about getting close to this bad boy with all those guns and how tough it was? |

Thinking each B17 had 12~14 of them providing cover for it self and its buddies that would be one large sphere of pain. Desperation or madness to fly into that sphere. |
