Enemy Plane Damage
If you shoot an enemy plane and make it have a fuel leak will it quickly loose fuel and crash.
|
Possibly. I know that in the PC Il2s you can get hit in a fuel tank and run out of fuel yourself, and I'm pretty sure I have seen it happen to AI planes too, but I don't know about Birds of Prey. Anyway, it takes a couple of minutes before you run out of fuel so you won't really notice unless it happens to your own plane.

I once even landed the spit on that large runway with a hole blown in both wings, a hole in the tail section, bullet holes in the canopy, huge chunks in the elevators, jammed flaps, oil spattered cockpit and no propellor. |

you could probably do it yourself. just park your spit behind the enemy bomber without shooting it (very tempting) and let it fill you with hot lead until you think there is no more your plane can take. i would advise being somewhat near a runway or large field. |

I tried something like that. I thought I would have a good look at the damage modeling by parking my Spit alongside a He111 and getting shot up some. First bullet killed my pilot, which wasn't the kind of damage I was looking for, but it was funny.
|
I have never had my pilot killed. I did like killing German bomber pilots in the original IL 2 because I could switch my camera to their plane and see the dead pilot in the cockpit while plane went spinning toward the ground.

My pilot has only been killed when I was playing one of my dad's flight simulator games called Combat Flight Simulator 3.

It would be kinda cool if they added some blood so that if a pilot or gunner gets shot blood splatters all over the cockpit.

The very first versions of Il-2 had a semi-hidden option for blood splattering on the windows and on the pilot, they took it out later though.

I just experienced this yesterday. I was trying my hand at realistic for Dover and got shot to when I was just chasing down bombers at the end. I watch my speed dwindle, by altitude get lower, and finally stall out over the water. It is maddening trying to get to the mainland going about 157

This does remind me of what often happened in Il-2 when attacking bombers.
During the attack you'd catch one or two bullets in the engine from the bombers tail gunners which you might not even notice. The hits would cause damage to the fuel line, oil line, radiator or another component of the engine. After a while the engine would start to fail as it over heated or something and you'd eventually lose too much airspeed and crash quite a while after the origonal hit. There was usually a weird grinding noise from the engine as it started to fail or some light smoke/fuel vapor/oil but sometimes there was no warning until you started to lose engine RPM. Presuming the engine damage model is as good as in PC Il-2 it could be this or you could just be running the throttle at 100% for too long. After you disengage from a battle, check the oil pressure, fuel gage and engine temp for any problems. |
Yeah, I've lost count of the number of times I have taken one or two insignificant looking hits in the engine during combat and later had to put my plane down in a field because the engine gave out while playing Il2 1946.

Here is the thing. I have never played IL2 other then this BoP demo... Even if I do check the gauge, how will I be able to fix my damage? Do I land back at the airfield?

In the previous Il-2 games critical damage ment you either got back to the airfield and ended the mission alive or took you chances trying to ditch/bail out, either way the mission was over for you. In the vids I've seen of BOP you could crash more than once and respawn so you could just do that. |
I really like the damage model in the demo but I noticed that when I am in the spitfire and my left wing gets damaged there is always a large hole in the same spot evey time.

Same with bullet holes in cockpit, and the oil, all fixed places. |
Still, it was one of the best looking damage models at the time and still looks great today.
SOW will have dynamic damage apparently! |
SOW is going to be amazing. No offence to Anton and his team, but a console port of Il2 doesn't really compare with the first true sequel to the original Il2.

And fine maybe damage is fixed and does it have more of that Hollywood style, I'll still try my best to become an Ace of Aces. Thats what this game is to me! :-P;) |
