First impressions post

Hi !
I am at work at the moment and I cannot download the game at the moment :(
So i just creat the thread to make people share their first impressions on this game :)
I have just waited all night long to download it argh...:(
I am waiting so much of this wonderful game that IL2 is !

So, I am new here so I'm from Switzerland and I am just in love of warbirds since I was a baby :)
Big fan of IL2 on PC I'am waiting this new version since the first screenshot

2 weeks ago I was with my brother to Duxford for one of the best Warbirds Air Show of Europe and since this day I can't sleep anymore lol

So share your opinion of the demo version ! ;)

See Ya

Zensuji 07-29-2009 10:11 AM

Not great TBH....graphics are nice but you can only play in arcade :(

carbury 07-29-2009 10:20 AM

Really ?
Soooo sad....you sure you can only play on arcade mode ?
I can't undersant this choice...IL2 is a simulation first of all...that's really sad that the demo show only the arcade mode :(
Maybe it's a commercial reason ?...do not know... sad anyway...
ps: what's TBH ?
thx for your post

carbury 07-29-2009 10:32 AM

Oh ok looks like you can got the simulation mode after finished the first mission....Tally ho !!!!!:grin::grin::grin::grin::grin::grin::grin:
Keep to share shaps ! ;)

Altough Sim mode feels a bit weird to me, how can you steer without spinning?

loopdreams 07-29-2009 11:34 AM

First impressions are that it's lovely, everything I was hoping for. However unless I'm being a big thicky and not seeing the option to change it then it is almost completely unplayable for me without a flightstick. I'm too used to the primary flight controls being on the right with throttle and rudder on the left. Both from most other games I have played as well as twenty odd years of flying RC with a transmitter in that configuration. Even most flightsticks put the throttle in your left hand and I'm slightly confused as to why the reverse configuration is the default or only one available.

Skii 07-29-2009 11:47 AM

Overall I'm very impressed. Visually it is absolutely stunning - the landscape and the sheer number of buildings is amazing, the detail is hard to believe, it is pretty much everything I wanted it to be, and what I suspected.

After playing through the tutorials I was able to unock the other difficulty modes which made shooting Heinkels a tiny bit more difficult (with 20mm cannons )

Controlling the aircraft and the views I found very frustrating, after playing the demo the first thing I definately need to get in preparation for the whole game is a decent joystick. The left stick control is very sensitive and extremely hard to correctly apply the right pressure for a smooth turn, particularly in simulation mode, the right stick controls rudder and throttle, however pressing the right stick down controls the view which I found extremely fiddly and un-natural, maintaining pressure on the right stick to look around is uncomfortable at best and I'm not happy with it at all.

I noticed there was no damage/bullet striking effects when I fired at the ground as well.

Couldn't find an airstrip to practice landing but I suspect I'm in for a very frustrating time trying to do it with the Xbox controller!

By applying 0.0001 lb backpressure with the left stick....

Saturat 07-29-2009 11:48 AM

I'm stuck at work, keep the impressions coming guys .-)
Anyone tried this with the Aviator? is it working well?

DH1979 07-29-2009 12:00 PM

You Xbox owners are so lucky man. Enjoy. No news on PSN demo yet, fingers X.

SleepTrgt 07-29-2009 12:02 PM

Can anyone explane me more about the trimming and the flaps?

loopdreams 07-29-2009 12:05 PM

Trimming seems to work by holding an attitude with the stick and then hitting the button to trim the plane to that attitude. Flaps I haven't fully figured out as I had one attempt at landing so far and crashed but I imagine that they work how they should, lower the planes stall speed so you can land more slowly.

I put the sensitivity a bit lower, and now i have alot more control in the spitfire. Also putting flaps in combat mode helps.

carbury 07-29-2009 12:23 PM

Yeah SATURAT, do not worry you not alone at work ;)
So the impressions comming lookg quite good.
Everbody looks loving the grahphics and the feeling of Simulation mode.
What about the sounds ? In the videos they sounds amazing.
What about the warning Pull Up ? Is it possible to switch off ? or is it only in Simulation mode ?

Keep the feedback !
See ya !
Enjoy your demo lucky guys :)

SleepTrgt 07-29-2009 12:33 PM

does anyone know why my plane keeps rolling to the left?

carbury 07-29-2009 12:37 PM

Oh I just forgot one question :
Are the ammo realistic ? I mean quantity of ammunitions, balistic and damaged ?
Can't wait to get my hands on it !

In simulation I *think* it's the reaction of the torque from those great big propellers.

Yeah, I was just loitering, but all this chitter chatter has made me join the forum...

Shame about the lack of co-op, this has turned most of my mates away from this nugget - I'm still wanting.

Oh and hello

Moscow here. Don't really care about co-op, would be cool though. Can't wait to get my hands on the demo. Love the forums, it's my first post though. Just wanted to say hello. :)

loopdreams 07-29-2009 12:58 PM

You know what, this game is brilliant. It's a proper flight sim and it's ON MY TELLY. I'm off to Gamestation in a bit to buy a flightstick.:)

Zensuji 07-29-2009 01:06 PM

If you take the stick sens down so its 8 notchs up from the left on both sensitivities....you cant physically spin it.

carbury 07-29-2009 01:12 PM

hey,
Just watched this movie and I am a bit dispointed...
We can follow a Spit during BOB but during the movie you hear the english communication AND the german communication as well ?!?

Told me that not all the game is like that !! please !

That's bad news for me as well if you can't change the config, I've been flying RC planks and helis, may have to turn the PS3 pad up side down and reverse all the settings!

carbury 07-29-2009 01:37 PM

I love WWII simulations but for me a real simulation don't have the enemy communication at all ! Or you can switch on enemy frequency like in IL2 1946. But not both at same time.
Sounds like arcade game you know. So, it's only my opinion. ;)
If you can disable what you want so everybody will found his own configuration and that is the most important
thank's for you reply ;)

Yeap, I share your scare about Multiplayer ;)
I am sure that the first time, I will not have time to switch on my awesome Spitfire's Merlin engin that a damned 190 will fall on me
So on, my login in multiplayer is Carbury for the one who want to shoot down a little Swiss Guy hahaha ;)
See you in the sky :)

Yossarian 07-29-2009 02:07 PM

I've been playing the first mission on sim mode. I was flying about for 20 mins no problems shooting some bombers down, accidentally miss identified a Spitfire and shot him down, then got stuck into some JU87, unfortunately I had my first spin then and at low alt, it was all over for me.

Great game, so far, I really like it.

Need an option to swap the sticks over, I fly RC planes and am struggling to get used to having my controls reversed, I need to buy a stick I think.

Soviet Ace 07-29-2009 02:15 PM

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ITS SO GREAT!!! I FEEL LIKE A KID IN A TURN AND BURN CANDY SHOP!!!! I'm going to go play it right...NOW! CU all when the final product is released. Then I will give you all my ID so we can fly together, and hopefully FLY AGAINST ONE ANOTHER :D CU all gotta go become a true ace :)

Something i noticed, in the Anti tank missions the ground targets dont show up untill you're very close, makes it hard to aim in sim mode

carbury 07-29-2009 03:13 PM

ok thank's for the advice.
Probably that is more realistic like that. I think that was really hard to find your target in that mess lol
++

SleepTrgt 07-29-2009 03:26 PM

Also note that those tanks are a bit camouflaged, and the map is your friend!

Soviet Ace 07-29-2009 03:33 PM

O.K., so I just got my first dose of trying to belly land, just to see how it was. DAMN IT WAS SO COOL!!! Even though the scoop caught something invisible on the ground, and I started spinning. IT WAS AWSOME!! The cockpit view is a lot easier to get control of than I thought it would be. Alright I'm off again to become an ace, not that I'm already not :D

And I think its actually easy to spot the camouflaged tanks. I just do a couple of passes, and then just buzz 'em CU all in the sky

It's because in reality, you shouldn't be able to pull the stick all the way back.

This is why you NEED to get a flightstick...and so do I. :(

Steiner 07-29-2009 05:03 PM

This game demo looks beautiful, it handles very well with the Ace Edge HOTAS and the cockpit view is fantastic.
I really like the first person (on the nose) HUD view, it's perfect and the view I'm most comfortable with at the moment.
I'm gonna go preorder BoP today at GameStop so I can get a T-Shirt.

dandymountfarto 07-29-2009 05:57 PM

so...is anyone missing the redouts and blackouts then ;-D

i think the demo is good value - lets you get a taste for aerial and air-ground combat, try out all the settings. my only gripe is the free look control, i find it a bit awkward keeping the stick clicked down and trying to look about but im hoping to have a flightstick by the time of the full release so hopefully wont have to worry about it anymore!

cant get over how beautiful it all looks with a minimum of frame rate drop even at low level - the ardennes forest looks so atmospheric.

roll on sept 4th - will be a day to remember!

SleepTrgt 07-29-2009 06:09 PM

I really dont like the P-51, damn spinning airplane

Satyricon 07-29-2009 06:47 PM

You can toggle these communications off.

DigitalMan 07-29-2009 11:23 PM

I'm already missing the blackouts and redouts, and I can't read the instrument panel! The click to look around is also annoying, and my mustang always explodes whenever I attempt a controlled crash landing. Once I went nose up before stopping, and then exploding. I guess everyone has their complaints, nevertheless, it's great to be flying on my 360.

Kind of silly to complain about the lack of black outs and red outs, while at the same time playing the game with a gamepad.

There is no click to look around, if you play the way a flight sim is meant to be played. :P

SlappyDingle 07-30-2009 12:14 AM

It sure would be nice to have the ability to toggle the "free look" on or off. That click-in business is so imprecise...

+1
Anyway the more I play it the more I like it. Somethings should be improved but BOP has a great potential.
I guess that with a joystick we should look around more easily. The Saitek Aviator is on my sight.

I haven't tried that yet.....definitely an idea there. I keep pulling the stick into my gut too much. So to speak.

Virtual gut.

DigitalMan 07-30-2009 06:15 AM

You know what sucks... I bought a PC Saitek Aviator for the original IL-2 before hearing of the 360/PC version. If I'm going to get another stick, I'm going to have two of the same. What a waste. :(

Chrester 07-30-2009 07:10 AM

It helped a lot to lower the sensitivity of the pad axis to improve the control of the flight.
But for the pan view around i would prefer like said before, toggle the view around by pressing for example the LB and then use RS as normal fps looking.
Anoying to click the RS and view around.

Why not sell your current stick as the aviator works on both xbox and pc.

Ju-87 07-30-2009 11:44 AM

Here are my first impressions with some criticism. Don't think that I'm being negative, it's just that the great things about this game are pretty obvious by now and already have been mentioned! :)

-Framerate seems a bit sluggish sometimes when zooming or using free-look. Hopefully this is not as noticeable in multiplayer (...since it's less stuff on screen at once?)

-Looking around with gamepad can be a bit frustrating, since I always have to make sure to click it in before moving the stick. Pretty often I find myself lowering the throttle or engaging WEP, going into a stall or spin instead of looking around. :(

-Radiochatter is often annoying, especially when they're played at the same time as the objectives are read, resulting in a mess of voices. The radio chatter gets pretty repetive as well, I got sick of hearing "Lower, lower!" every five seconds in mission 2 because I flew too high. It's not like I didn't knew that already, so I ended up muting it totally.

-How flaps and trim work isn't explained in the demo. I still haven't figured it what they do and how they work...

H Lecter 07-30-2009 12:07 PM

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums and a great flight sim freak.

It took me by surprise that the demo is out already for Xbox360. Just a pity I can only play Friday to Sunday as I don't have access to my beloved box during workdays (weekend commuter :()

After reading all the comments here it looks like I have to get the Aviator flightstick from Saitek  It's just a pity that you cannot watch any replay after the mission like in Over-G fighers, but I guess there needs to be potential for improvement for the next installment of the series ;)

All the videos and screenshots really look fantastic. I still cannot believe that finally someone heard my prayers about bringing a real simulation to consoles instead of Blazing Angels and HAWX idiocy. A real cockpit view! Real flight model! A landscape that takes your breath to spice the whole thing up!

Boys I cannot wait to get my shaking hands on this game! :-D:-D:-D

Moog 07-30-2009 12:16 PM

To me the frame rate seemed pretty smooth, only getting bit sluggish when there was smoke on skreen. I hope this is not an issue in the full game? Is it, Anton? Or should we get used to living with that. I am also a bit concerned of what the frame rate might be like for really dense areas, like big cities, with dozens of planes in the skies, everything burning, etc. Will it slow into a crawl?

Anton, could you please comment?

Most of the time - 30 fps. No less than 20 in worst case (I mean, few frames, not conditions).

Also, use your map. If you aren't in a massive cluster, then you can usually distinguish whether the plane you are facing is enemy or ally.
