Oleg worked on Korea for il2
Fred: Which campaign or expansion did you/your team never get around to, that you still wished you had? There was much talk about a Korea expansion after Cliffs of Dover – was that just wishful thinking by Ilya or did some work actually start?
Oleg: Korea was actually half-way done for IL-2, and then scrapped for the Cliffs of Dover engine. There was a tremendous amount of research done for it, and a large collection of references, 3D models and other work is still gathering dust on Ilya’s hard drive. I know he’s still very sad because all that work went to nothing. Unfortunately, as it is today, most of the art done for the Korean project way back then is hopelessly obsolete, so it would not be usable in today’s world. We briefly considered doing a DCS project around it, but it’s just not up to the same standards. We’d have to redo it from scratch. http://www.simhq.com/air-combat/il-2...vik-part1.html http://www.simhq.com/air-combat/il-2...vik-part2.html http://www.simhq.com/air-combat/il-2...vik-part3.html http://www.simhq.com/air-combat/il-2...vik-part4.html Wouldn`t it be possible for TD to work on the Korea stuff to enhance il2 until 1952? It`s just dreaming but hey, asking doesnt cost a thing  |
Great to heard that

I still have the (now defunt) RRG Studios page bookmarked from those days, here's a link at the wayback machine archive:

It's a shame. There used to be some beautiful screen shots of a Douglas AD-3 or -4 (?) they were working on. It was absolutely breathtaking! Of course, I could be a little biased towards carrier based aircraft ;) But regardless, it was a beautiful model and I was very heartened by the fact that they were planing on including the carrier war in the Korea add-on rather than just re-doing a Mig Alley type sim.

I still hope for a proper Korean air war sim at some point in the future. It'd be very interesting to do. |

Well... in the sources, we've got from 1C, there are very few to none models or anything regarding that theatre. Not sure, what Oleg means there with 'half the way'... much probably all the reseach work.
RRG had a lot of stuff, but that was planed for the CloD engine since the beginning. I worked for that project (galba) myself... |
the air combat-sim world aches for a "new" Korea simulation, even if it's based on an old engine. TD has worked miracles so far. Is there nothing it can do now?

We'd need a couple of teams doing maps and map objects and a good number of people working on aircraft. Not impossible, but I think it would take a concerted effort. |
There's been a fair bit of mod work for the planes and maps of the KTO. In particular, the MiG-15 and F-86 look quite good, as do the KTO maps, but I don't know if they're actually up to TD standards.
Other planes have been modeled, but they're not as good-looking. IIRC, there's the La-9, La-11, H-16 Sioux/Bell 47, A-26 Invader, F-84 Thunderjet, F4U-4 and F4U-5 Corsair, F8F Bearcat, and F9F Panther/Tiger/Cougar which are pretty good looking except for "franken-cockpits" and the T-6 Texan and P-82 Twin Mustang which are crude "franken-planes." But there are two huge problems with an IL2-based Korean War add on. The first problem is that IL2 doesn't support realistic helicopter flight, which cuts out of of the unique features of the Korean War - early helicopter ops. The second problem is the NG consent decree, which would gut the list of available U.S. naval aircraft. How are you going to have a decent Korean add-on without planes like the F7F Tigercat, F8F Bearcat, F9F Panther/Cougar and the F4U-4/-5 Corsair? |
