Similar games?

Hey!

So I finished WotN over the holidays, and (while I wasn't crazy about the whole thing with all its bugs and neverending viking-on-undead fights) it gave me some inspiration to replay Crossworlds all over again, and that was awesome.

Right now however I'm stuck without a decent strategy/rpg... I tried HoMM VI but that uninspired mess stinks to high heavens. Any tips on great similar games out there?

Thanks!

Kings Bounty - the Legend with HoMM3 babies mod. Great fun :-)

You will have more success just browsing some websites, but from top of my head there are couple I can remember and put them in similar category as KB, Disciples & Etherlords, I think there are both made by our Russian friends not 1c other friends:-P, don’t quote me on that thou.

There is another game called Silent Storm, this is a great strategy game set in the WWII. Party of six, turn-based combat, you can annihilate everything.

Also there is few games coming out this year worth checking out, like Dead State or Age of Decadence, I might even see that Omerta: City of Gangsters granted it’s simulation but still combat is TB :)

I would suggest playing either HOMM3 or HOMM5 instead of HOMM6, i personally like HOMM5 the most but a lot of people like HOMM3 more, probably because of nostalgia :). Just buy either one of those with all the dlc's and you have much more content than HOMM6.

Other than that there's not really that many games in this genre... If you like complex grand strategy that doesn't have fancy 3D graphics and combat but certainly are one of the best games when it comes to strategy, you should check out Paradox games like Hearts of iron series, Crusader Kings 2 and Europa Universalis 3.

I can't think of any other good TB games like KB series right now, there really isn't that many out there.

Take a look http://www.1cpublishing.eu/games/Strategy

I liked "Ascension to the Throne" even its graphic is bad, it long not good as HoMM or KB and you would play it just 1 time but for me it was nice for a shot quickie. I could get it for 5 bugs, don't know why it is so expensive now.

Maybe take a look to Disciples (III).

King's Bounty is only one of its kind.

Thanks guys, awesome tips!

I did give HoMM 5 a quick spin, but it's just too easy. :p I guess after KB it's no wonder. By the way, why the HoMM 3 & 5 recommendations, and no 4? Last HoMM I played was 3, I remember briefly installing 4 many years ago and not liking the new 3D engine. Any other problems?

I'm really liking Disciples III so far. On the hardest setting the early parts of the maps are quite challenging - and I like their take on the HoMM/KB formula. Not as open-ended like KB (quite a bit on rails, actually) but it's pretty sweet nonetheless.

Great stuff here, lots to check out. Do you guys know where I could buy Etherlords? It's not on Steam or GOG.

Try Disciples 2 gold , besides the artwork and maybe the music i loved everything so much more then III. I was just sad when i saw III for the first time.

I will give it another chance as soon as I'm finished with III. The thing is, I already have II from Steam - but the artwork looked incredibly dated and it had serious performance issues, the mouse pointer was updating every 3 seconds or so in the game.

Just a quick update:

I finished Disciples III and ended up not liking it much after about 50% into the game. It was rather repetitive and I kept hitting the level cap halfway through a map. The end was rather anticlimatic.

I was able to get Disciples II up and running properly in an XP VM. I got over the artwork; it's a bit dated but it does have a style that you can appreciate.

Also, Etherlords I/II can be purchased on Impulse/GameStop.

I never liked disciples 2; others do but I found it boring and well just plain yucky. However, age of wonders (esp age of wonders shadow magic is great). There are fantastic player made maps (both single and multieplayer) @ http://aow.heavengames.com ; highly recommended but of course being 10 years old the graphics are very dated.

Very strong rumors that a brand new aow 3 will come out this year (no clue how it will compare to the old version; but the same developers are making it so hopefully it will be no worse :) )

I prefer age of wonders to homm (which I think of being 'dumb' down even though it came first) but homm 3 was indeed fun the last time I played. LIke the op I found homm 5 to be rather dry and easy.

I'm actualy really liking HOMM VI right now. The crashing is annoying but the game is awesome and totally unexpected is that I think it is the best HOMM single player of all. The campaings are epic. I haven't tried multiplayer yet because unless they fix the city crash bug, MP would be unplayable.
