What a mess about, imagine if one of the guns jam in action and you have to cock it again with that wire T handle. I liked the way he just throws the dead fuse behind him. It always impresses me the the technology they had then, thats quite a modern turret really, all electric with a joystick interface.

Try one of these
40mm Bofors

He111 08-13-2012 01:15 PM

I couldn't believe it! The defiant gunner used a joy-stick!!

BTW, loved the Bofors 40MM, i always imagined Boulton Paul might have developed a new aircraft with the excellent Defiant frame, remove the turret and add 1 40mm bofor gun :) .. then you'd have a TRUE bomber destroyer! :)

No, the parachute is beside him and has to be attached to the special suit he is wearing instead of the regular harness.

Tavingon 08-14-2012 05:17 PM

I always thought they had it sown into a special flight suit or something.. would be fun for CLOD that is sure

He111 08-15-2012 01:20 AM

Probably one of the reasons why the Flight leader of 144 Sqn called the defiant a def-trap ..

and notice how the flarings, both forward and rear automatically move up and down as the turret rotates.

Love the bit about, "If you don't close the sliding doors it can get a bit draughty!" That's the understatement of the year! And they didn't even give them a cheat sheet! If I'd seen that before volunteering for a gunner I think I'd have switched to being a cook!
