How do I get exhaust flame?

I've noticed in a few of the vids that the planes have exhaust flames during flight ...how? I have visual effects & model detail turned up to high , but no joy.Is my PC automatically limited or do I need to turn another option up? It looks nifty, but does it also effect FPS?

Only with CEM, complex engine management, and only in your own aircraft I think.

As Ailantd said above, only with CEM. It DOES look nifty :) but the exhaust flames are also useful, using CEM, to adjust your throttle (boost), propellor pitch (engine rpm), and mixture settings.

Blue flames = good
Yellow flames = bad

Is there a way to go into config and get the flames without fussing with CEM???

Yes I'd be very interested if there is...I like CEM but it is very cumbersome in flight at times...

I just have to agree with that, i'm afraid, :D

Well no need to be elitist.I only fly with CEM, but that doesn't mean everyone else has to. :)

CaptainDoggles 11-17-2011 09:11 PM

CEM truly isn't that hard to manage, at least on fighters. I hear the Blenheim is pretty demanding.

I wouldn't call myself an elitist I actually suck at this sim I can hardly hit anything I'm aiming at, but I have to say I blow my engines up a lot less now. I mean the whole point of my enjoyment with this sim is all the things I have to pay attention to just to keep her in the air or at least that is what I enjoy about this sim. No insult intended just found it funny:grin:

Is there a "Dummies" way to do this on the fighters? When I've dabbled I get no power, engine problems, etc.

Hunden 11-17-2011 09:38 PM

Not sure what you mean. Just make sure oil rads are open along with radiator and adjust prop pitch. I'm probably wrong about this but I look at prop pitch like i would a stick shift. When you adjust your pitch you will see rpm increase or decrease. Almost forgot an increase in rpm doesn't always translate into going faster as I have recently discovered. Kinda like doing 80 when your in fourth gear then down shifting into second, your rpms will shoot up but your speed will definitly drop along with your motor.

I agree with that and had a bit of a chuckle when I first read it. The CEM (for me) is what sets this sim apart from what came before. It was a pain in the rear at first because I hate reading manuals. Sort of fun to figure it out as I go along. Took me a while to figure out the prop mechanism on the early 109's and kept under and over revving. Yesterday I found out there's a fuel quantity selector knob in the Hurricane so you can see how much fuel is left in each tank. Also never realized Hurricanes have a takeoff flap setting.

What also did not help was that I thought that a lot of the CEM was porked or not implemented. The deeper I get into this sim the more respect I have for the guys that went out in these crates and put their lives on the line every time they went up.

There are still a bunch of knobs and levers and switches that are not clickable yet. Hope everything gets implemented at some point. I also hope they come up with an option for starting with a prewarmed engine. Bit of a bore sitting at the airfield getting straffed and not being able to defend yourself. Left early with a cold engine a couple of times. Something in the engine or prop goes pop fizzle and the windshield get's oily and next thing you know you're a glider.

You should make a dedicated thread about it, so everyone will see it and can chime in with advice, tips, etc. I would also do a forum search, as I believe this has come up quite often in the past few months and there have been some good guides posted as I recall.

Make sure you mention which fighter you fly the most.

As far as exhaust colour goes it's quite complicate. What you want is a combination of two colours.
