OT: What do you think of this?
Hi all,
Hope it's okay to discuss here. Gaijin has just announced a new MMO flight simulation game, World of Planes. There's a new website as well. What do you think? MAC http://www.worldofplanesgame.com http://i1222.photobucket.com/albums/...nesWebsite.jpg |
I hope it's ok to discuss too but inevitably as has been demonstrated in this community 'all hell will break loose'
but my 2 cents on this are: it will be another wings of prey......kind of pretty to look at but nothing behind the eyes, generic flight models and engine sounds that have only 2 pitches high/low rpm and aimed more at the console style player. |

good marketing and interesting website.... wish il2 had the same. wont comment on the game while i havent played it.
|
If it's gonna follow the same model as World of Tanks then it will be a success. Last time I logged at WoT there were about 28.000 players online, stark contrast to CloD's average of 10-20 players.:)

it will be another wings of prey

Hopefully World of Planes will be a success, especially if they will improve on what they delivered with WOP. There is usually no problem discussing other sims on this forum, until the fans of other sims come into these forums and suggest home much better their sim is than this one. Then your bound to get an argument. If you want to degrade a sim you'll get a much better reception in your own forum.

But it remains to be seen what they can deliver.. Quote:

Looks like a new Wings of Prey. Does not come close to CoD.
|
as long as they make simulations no problem with me
hopefully not an arcade game:grin: |

I don't know what makes you think I should have been happy about CoD's problems. This is not so. I like CoD, it's an amazing project, and I wish it every success. MAC |
A good massive multiplayer ww2 flying game is badly needed. Aces high is milking what's left of it's community with a game from 1999.
If they don't dumb it down too much I'll play it. I still remember the excitement of going with 30 plane mission under the radar deep in enemy teritory to attack some high value targets, when you know there are 250 players in the enemy team that, if detected, could all come to ruin your day. I signed up for the beta. :) |

The A10 thread on this forum is a very good example of how another sim may be discussed in a great way. Noone there is in the degrading business, very pleasant and informative. MAC |
I don't mind World of Planes being successful, quite the opposite. But judging by the concessions World of Tanks does to "fun" I just can't see it as a realistic flight sim.
|
I will indeed buy it just to support the development of more flight sims. Creating a false market if you will just so the bean counters will say they can justify the expense of further development of more flight sims. But for me its a game I will end up owning but use the disk as a drink coaster.

I like World Of Tanks a lot and of course as masochist play the German tanks ;) So checked this out and signed up for beta..if lucky enough to get in :) If done right this can be a success. Never enough WW2 sims :) |

What's all this 'at least I can play a beta instead of buying an alpha' stuff that gets throw around all the time, at the end of the day what difference does it make which part of the time line the money gets spent? the outcome is the same.....money is spent!

Again, purely speculative here. MAC |
Yeah....I'm sorry but this reeks of going down a MMO console style affair.
and subsequently putting another nail in the true flight sim coffin. |

Wouldn't paint the future quite so black. IF the business model is as I have speculated, Gaijin would naturally have to attract a LOT of people to break even with the game. This would mean that they couldn't make the game too difficult because that would put too many newcomers off. Due to the continuous world nature of the game Gaijin would need to run their own dedicated servers with a set difficulty. So far, so bad. However, two points which may help see this in a more optimistic light: 1. Even if the game would turn out Super Arcadey (which I hope it will not), this would still bring a lot of people to the genre of WWII flight who might otherwise have not found their own way here otherwise. And many of those would be here to stay, and find their way to more demanding flight simulations. 2. Gaijin could decide to run several parallel worlds with different sets of difficulties, from Arcade to something closer to a more realistic flight simulation, although it would remain to be seen how good of a simulation they could deliver. In any case, what's to be feared by Cliffs of Dover? There's always an elite that gets fed by a broad basis. If CloD is the Rolls Royce of flight simulations, it doesn't need to worry about all the Mazdas, Renaults and VWs around. MAC |

I don't know how ambitious Birds of Steel will be. I'd expect it to be better than Birds of Prey was, but how much of a flight simulation it will become remains to be seen. In any case, I think even Birds of Prey was a wonderful way to bring people who happen to play on consoles in touch with the genre. There's still a good community there who love the game, of which some have migrated to Cliffs of Dover. The difference this time between Birds of Steel and World of Planes will be greater though. Wings of Prey was clearly a port from the console version which was done after the console version was finished. Difference there was that Wings of Prey saw additional development, however the gameplay remained restricted pretty much to what it was on consoles. World of Planes and Birds of Steel are parallel developments right from the start. Of course they would share common resources (it would be madness if they wouldn't), but World of Planes looks quite like a different concept which is taking the greater possiblilties of the PC/MAC platforms into account. I would hope it has something interesting to offer even for the more sophisticated simmers. MAC |

MAC what do want to accomplish by this thread in the middle of the Cliffs of Dover forum? Are you taking a survey of people over here that would be interested with the billboard ad you've so kindly erected for us? Personally I only have room in my brain for one sim at a time and this hasn't been released yet.

No more of an advert than DCS, Falcon 4.0, Rise of Flight, FSX, many of which get posts, but many that do not get flamed?
Seems we can only have one interest in one sim and not share any news with anyone if it is barely OT. I thought CloD users enjoyed Flying games with WW2 Combat? How is World of Planes so-far off topic and worthy of 'Flaming', when RoF is WW1, FSX is not WW anything and DCS is effectively future combat. Why is it that if you share an opinion about anything outside of the CloD remit it is seen as an advert rather than passing on news to those who like to live in a world without blinkers! Cheers MAC, appreciate the time and thought it took to pass on news, sadly many 'purists' now how the game already plays and what it looks like without the next 12-months of development. Impressive! I suppose they have learned from years of development only to be disappointed with the final result? MP |

And yes I do notice the plugs in here for these others as well. Interestingly there is this same plug in the Birds of Prey forums but I didn't find one in the IL-2 Sturmovik forums. Why were our brothers other there left out of this fine release? They would love this. Please notify them. |

timej31,
this is an OT thread, discussing news of a game of the same genre and the same time period. If you don't want to think of more than one simulator at a time, nobody forces you to read this thread or join the discussion. I have said before that I hope it's okay to discuss this here, and if it's not and a moderator disallows it I won't argue about it. However there are other sims discussed OT on this forum without problem in a pleasant and informative manner. So, I was discussing. I feel I have done or said nothing here that's insulting or derogatory to anyone and that would call for a reaction such as yours. That's just uncalled for. MAC |

Well I'm excited if only for the fact, that there will be a new WW11 flight combat sim to check out. They have a good chance of putting together a decent sim, I hope they have success...just flying above infantry is going to be a cool aspect for me.
|
MAC I have not been anything but completely supportive of all sims regardless. As I said in my very first reply to this off topic thread "I will indeed buy it just to support the development of more flight sims." I also alluded to the fact that "I will end up owning but I will (like many others sitting my desk right now) use the disk as a drink coaster".
Why don't you request they create a forum for these post in the root of this site rather than selectively placing them into the Cliffs of Dover forums? As I said before I never saw this in the IL-2 Sturmovik forums. I am still waiting for this to appear over there so we do not discriminate or forget about them. I know they will absolutely love it. Whatever it takes ya know. I don't care. I will support the business only because I want more development in this but I still stand by what I said earlier. I will do it only for you and the others that play it even though I will probably end up giving it away to someone else. |

Well if it wasn't off topic I would love to post that I have a nice water cooled gaming rig for sale on eBay and it's only $500. I will even pick up the shipping charges. But I wont post that here. You can see how quickly that can get out of hand. You allow it for this but not for that. And just as good a case for allowing the PC selling in here that is perfect for Cliffs of Dover can be made as that game was for posting here. Where do you draw the line? The goalpost move a lot.
|
timej31,
I can't see why you objected so strongly to the discussion here, especially since you say you're supportive of new developments. I'm not aware of you objecting OT discussions of other sims. Since you asked why I haven't posted this info on the IL-2 forum, the answer is that I never played IL-2 and am not familar with that forum. I'm however interested in CoD and am here very frequently.
